Mrs. L. is out of the hospital for a couple of days now, and doing well.

Again, there are no words to express my gratitude to the members of this forum for everything they have done for me, and especially for her.

You guys know who you are.

I have had many blessings in my life, some of which I was too self-absorbed to realize were there. Knowing you guys (and girls), being one of you, is one of the best.

Oh, and to celebrate, here's a pic of an HI Ek-Chirra Chainpuri khukuri. "The Hook" I like to call it.

That is great news Mike...

And thanks for posting the Chainpuri... you just reminded me of ANOTHER khuk I wanted to get :D

Alan

This one has a bit more angle than the run-of-the-mill Chainpuri.
Hence the name.

It's a wicked little thing, and flawlessly crafted by KNN.

The tools (not pictured) are well made, too, and big enough to be useful.

Now, to get all that red stuff outta the handle.....

May she continue to do well. You are serving breakfast in bed and all the good stuff and attention, are you not, Michael???
BTW - I know eng chira, du chirra and tin chirra.....what the heck is an ek???

Maybe that's just what I thought Uncle called it. Whatever, it's a single fuller, in this case it looks more like the classic "blood groove" on a Kabar.

I'm not yet good at taking pictures of highly polished blades.
I hope to have time soon to play with lighting and backgrounds to get better pictures to share. I have no experience in photography, but the digital camera affords lots of practice w/out the expense of film.

Maybe a shot of this one and my P220 would be...artsy?

No... that would be bragging :p :) :D

Mike,

Try taking it outside on a cloudy day and shooting... clouds are just huge softboxes in the sky...

'Ek' (say like English 'ache') is Hindi for "one", so that's perfectly correct for one fuller; whether or not it's proper khukuri-terminology, I dunno....I think both 'ek' and 'eng' (Nepali/Gurkhali?) derive from Sanskrit 'anga' (which can mean something like "beginning"--thus "1st"--, although it often means 'limb' [like an arm]. But it can also be a metaphorical limb, as in 'chaturanga', Sanskrit for "chess"--literally 'the four arms', i.e. the four 'divisions' of a 'complete' army [infantry, cavalry, elephants & chariots]).

I'm not positive that 'anga' is really the root word for 'ek' and 'eng', but I imagine they come from the same original word, whatever it is....sorry for the linguistic interlude.... ... in any case--

best of luck to you and yours once again Mike

Cheers, B.

on wood, a woodchuck answers...ask a question on steel, a smith and a historian answer....leather? - we have leather lizards... language? - we now have a resident linguist. Ladies and gentlemen, we are at a threshold...the formation of the HI University of the Sub Continent. This place, and these people, cannot be matched at any other site on the web. :D

I have watched and listened to you guys with amazement. I understand how knowledge is obtained, but where do you get these knives? They are something else!

Bobrap, the knife above was acquired from a kindly gentleman in Nevada by the name of Martino.

This is a matchless place....

Thanks Walosi :).

Does that mean I can add that as my 'official' title in my signature?

'Linguist In Residence, HI University of the Subcontinent'

:D :D

cheers, B.

:DMike, I'm glad that your wife is improving. That is fantastic news and a good way to start off this new year. That is a beautiful chainpuri you have- it surely looks "bloodthirsty". If it was mine I'd name it "Vlad the Impaler". :p Adios, Steve Miller

And ask for prayers, and ya get Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, (Zen?), Shinto, Native American, Catholic, Protestant and who knows what all else ( down in Louisiana, you never know ). Even Atheists and Agnostics to the best of their abilities. Best place I know of if you don't want to miss any bets.

Glad your wife is doing better.

Like they say, " If it's stupid but it works, it isn't stupid."

Which reminds me of the joke about the hard shell Baptist who liked to sneak away to the track. He was way behind for the day when he notices a priest come out and bless a longshot horse. It comes in first. Next time he sees the priest come out, he bets on another longshot the priest blesses and wins when it comes in first. This goes on the rest of the afternoon, and wins whenever he bets on one of the horses the priest blesses. Finally, last race of the day, he scrapes up every cent he can lay his hands on, bets everything on the horse the priest makes a special blessing over, and watches the horse come in dead last. He loses his shirt and everything else, so he goes to find the priest and ask what happened. Priest tells him "Can't you dumb Protestants tell the difference between a blessing and the Last Rites?"

Ben, you may certainly show the title of "Linguist in Residence".....but remember, it travels in company with the "Woodchuck Searchlight" put up by my misguided offspring (you have a chance to change your mind _before_ you remembered that :D )
