Not a review, but if any of you were wondering what Newt and Jerry Van Cook were cooking up, here's a picture.

This is based upon a Confederate "Bowie" that Newt has in his possession from the Civil War era.

Knife is 15" OAL with 10" blade of clay tempered 1084. 1.75" wide. Sharpened clip. Handle scales are micarta.

Shipped with a kydex sheath which Newt will replace with leather when he gets an opportunity to do so.

Nice balance and feel in the hand. Wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of this nasty piece of work.

This is not a "finished" knife in the artsy sense, but if you are interested in a reasonably priced handmade piece capable of defensive or camp work, this just may suit your needs.

Hey blues , these are great bowies (I have #7 ) but the sheath sent with mine is little more than a plastic bucket . The only way that the knife doesn't slide back and forth , side to side is to put it in backwards. I love the knife , but the sheath just wasn't up to the standards I'm used to with newts kydex.
So I made my own .... It's rough , but much more functional than the one sent. I'm waiting for M. Sastre to make his southern comfort available for the sandbars because if we have to wait for leather from hoof-and-mouth revaged countries , it will be next year before we get a quality sheath for these masterpiece bowies .

JUST GOT OFF NEWTS WEB SITE,
HE IS GOING TO DO A SECOND RUN OF THESE BOWIES, AFTER SEEING THIS ONE I HAD TO ORDER ONE, THAT IS A GREAT LOOKING KNIFE, WOULD DEFINATELY BE INTERESTED IN THE LEATHER SHEATH WITH IT, ANY ONE KNOW A GOOD SHEATH MAKER?

Michael Sastrre of River City Sheaths is planing on making a sheath for the Sandbar . Contact him at VideoSAS@aol.com

Edd,

The temporary solution to the sheath problem that I came up with was to tie a loop of paracord through the top rivet hole. I made it long enough to just pull over the opposite side guard. This allows me to push it off or pull it on as needed. It isn't elastic, so it does allow the knife to come up an inch or two, but still keeps it in the sheath.

Anyway, that's what I did. I'm sure the leather sheathes will be a great improvement.

To make above explanation a little clearer, here's a pic of sheath.

Rear side of sheath has a belt clip attached.

Elliott, I really like and Jerry baby !

I was lurking at their website just before to found out your post !

I like the "Marshall" a lot, don't you?

cheers,
JM

Hi, JM!

Even I'll admit it's a bit extreme for a neck knife. Then again, Fred could probably rig something up!

Good to hear from you.

Should I expect to see any of my friends in Atlanta?

I posted my opinion about an hour ago in the General forum. To repeat-It's much nicer than any picture. If you like Bowies, you will love this one!

#13 has been here for a while...gotta love it! Sharp? Oh yeah I was slicing tabloid sized sheets of newsprint almost the length of the blade!
If I was gunna pic nits, the edge grind wavers a little on one side (about an inch), near the guard. It is no biggie to me and for the price...hey no problem!
The best were the reactions.
My wife was sittin' next to me when I opened the package. She actually shivered!
"Is that what you wanted?"
"Oh yeah!"
"As long as you like it..."
2 of my buddies (on the edge of knifeknutdom) both made the same unspellable caveman noise!
Yes, this deserves one of MSastre's Southern Comfort sheaths...Are ya listenin' Mike?
Anyway great knife, great price and Newt is a great guy for puttin' up with us over on his forum

I got mine today & share the concerns that have been expressed about the loose sheath. Here's my quickie, down & dirty, solution:

sheath%20mod-1.jpg

As shown above, I first taped together two sets of three craft (like popsicle) sticks each. These went inside the sheath to function as the female side of a mold. I next taped six sticks together to function as the male portion. Apply heat (in my case via heat gun, but hair dryer or steam should also work), align male piece between female pieces (OK, don't get too excited here

), and press down with male piece. The results:

WARNING: By having so much plastic in contact with the blade, you will undoubtedly cause the typical scratches/burnishing... but also a snug & secure yet non-binding fit. YMMV.

Not trying to speak for Mike but I met up with him at the river today and he will be away at the Blade Show for a few days. He has been working on a Southern Comfort rig for his own SBB and to quote him "the clip makes it a b*tch to mold". He had a bunch of stuff going on for the Show so he couldn't spend more time on it. He did have some real sweet Ontario/Bagwell Bowie's all setup with a Southern Comfort sheath...plus a few other bags and boxes of goodies for the Show.
Regards,
Clyde

Nice work Brian

How do you like it now that it is there?
Thanx RC! I'm a patient guy...I may even raid my wife's craft box for some popsicle stix! Will a hair dryer really do it?
Ebbtide out.

Thanks, Ebbtide. "Have heat gun - will tinker" has been my motto for a while. A hairdryer is what I used to tweak the fit on a bunch of sheaths before I got the heat gun. It should work if it gets hot enough. If you do try it, periodically check the plastic to see if it's becoming pliable. You want to avoid both overheating it & inadvertantly heating areas you're not going to work.

I like it just fine. Overall fit & finish is very good. Balances well in my hand & should move very nicely. Mine is reasonably sharp as is and should be easy enough to bring to the next level. I'll post more next week after I've played with it a bit at our camp this weekend. My attention was somewhat divided last night -- my new Two Hawks hawk came yesterday too.
