I was thinking about buying a neck knife or two, just because I don't have one, and these seem to be affordable. I also like the designs.

Does anyone have experience with them? If so, what's the quality like? Because if the quality's lacking, then I was thinking about bumping the price point up a notch, and buy a neck knife from one of the large companies.

Edit- On a completely unrelated note, does anyone know how to get in touch with Outdoor Edge? I've e-mailed them and posted at their forum here, but no response. Calling's a bit difficult- I live in Japan.

as far as neckers go, i have a cammilus arc light, a livesay woo w/wrapped handle, a CRKT stiff kiss, a CS Spike, and a nealy 5" pesh kabz ( i know, kinda big for a necker, but it came w/a chain, lol) and of them all, would say the arc light is best edc knife, good sheath, light, takes a great edge, the woo is #2, and prob the best for SD, although it didnt come very sharp, the CRKT is ok, but the sheath is funky, and the spike would be good for stabbing only imho, my wife carries it in her purse some. the nealy is way to big to sling around your neck, mine anyway, lol.

of them all like the woo's looks best, a great little knife for the $$, bought mine off of a fellow forumite, $20 LNIB, if ya like them, go for it, they are a good knife. w/the chisel edge not the best edc/utility imho, though.

If you want a nice small blade neck knife... Go with the CRKT Carson F4! I have one and all my friends started getting them because they were so impressed. I wear mine everyday...except I don't wear it on my neck...the sheath comes with a variety of wear options... either on your belt, boot or clipped anywear else. It's also very comfortable when worn...

I have a Woo,and a Titainium Tiger by Newt Livesay. They are great values for the money. Newt's knives come with a good working edge that can be brought to a razor edge easily with whet stones, or diamond hones. For a great hide out the ti tiger is on the money, for self defense the woo can't be beat. I am planning on getting a Livesay Lil' Pecker:o (I can't stand saying that). Check Newt out here http://newtlivesay.com/. Newt just moved his shop and is going through some computer trouble at this point , but you can give him a call at 479-549-3356. I am waiting for my third knife from Newt now, the Uji. I can't wait, and will do a post when it comes. Let me know if you get one.
Stay Sharp,
Wali

Everytime I have to attack the cardboard that grows in my garage, I toss my Woo around my neck and have at it! What I didn't like about the other neckers mentioned so far with all of them in approx. the same price point is the steel. Newt uses 1095 with a great heat treat. All my Livesay's stay sharp. With Newt's parkarizing, you don't have to worry about rust creeping up so much either. I just hit them up with my Tough Cloth and they stay nice. Great knives with an even better value!

sph3ric pyramid,

For relatively cheap mass produced neck knives, I would consider getting the CRKT F4 and ARC Light. Both are a relatively cheap option so, are good choices to "test drive" the neck knife concept.

If you are willing to spend a little more, you have a jewel in Japan to consider:

Murray Carter from Kumamoto, Japan. His phone number is 81-96-272-6759 but, I have always contacted him through email at m_carter-cutlery@pop06.odn.ne.jp . His neck knives run about $150US in my home market (West Coast USA), in the Japanese home market I do not know what the cost would be. For an ABS (Amercian Bladesmith Society) MS (Master Smith), his prices are very reasonable. His credentials in Japan appear to be very good as well. I can send you a scan of his catalog showing neck knives if you send me your email.

Newt's knives are all excellent. He's list of clients includes a lot of folks that need fair-priced, good to excellent quality, STERILE knives, which speaks well of his work. He's a great guy to work with - upfront, honorable, and genuinely interested in selling you the right tool for your needs.

I have two of his knives.

The NRG is a Non-Magnetic Fiber Knife made of a pheno-resin based chemical compound & electrical grade linen cloth. It's designed for defensive stabbing (meaning it doesn't cut very well).

The NRGS has the same profile as the NRG, but is made of a good steel with an electrical-grade, natural finish linen micarta handle. This is a great knife for the price. It's not made of one of the exotic stainless steels. It might be 1095, but don't hold me to it. He has a great heat treat though. The result is a knife that has good edge retention that is very easy to sharpen. These are good qualities to have in a knife that might need to save your life, while also being able to be sharpened on a rock if you find yourself in a survival situation.

I especially like the linen micarta he uses. I don't care if it's covered with water, blood, or even motor oil. It still provides a great grip. This isn't true of all micarta, though. You can look at a other peoples knives like KA-BAR that use electrical grade linen micarta and seen why this specific micarta, left in it's natural state, is a favorite handle material when grip in adverse conditions is a must.

I truly can't say enough about his knives. You can definitely find better quality knives at higher prices, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a more functional knife for the price.

I have a few Woos including a Ti Woo and an ATS-34 double grind Executive Woo. The standard Woo is only $25.00. For utility the NRGS or Little Pecker would probably be better. You can also get the Woo in double grind. I have used the Uji as a neck knife. I also have both CRKT Stiff KISSs and the Emerson LaGriffe. The LaGriffe conceals the best out of all my neck knives but all of them conceal well even under a T-shirt. The Stiff KISSs don't really hold an edge well but are very easy to sharpen. I use them when I'm going to be somewhere where I will get wet. The Woo costs only a little more than the Stiff KISS but is a much better knife IMO.

I've been eyeing those Livesay neck knives too. I wouldn't mind having one (or more) myself.

The only experience I've had in the neck knife area is with the Camillus Arclite and the CRKT Carson F4. I frequently wear the Arclite since it's so low profile, though I don't like the fact that there isn't much to hang onto. Mine is 420HC, since I can't see a reason to spend so much more money for the D2 model (it is after all, only a neck knife). I liked the Carson a lot, but found that its sheath printed and was quite obvious, so I gave it to a friend as a gift.

I had a Livesay NRG neck knife. It was a definite "user". Nothing fancy, just well made, inexpensive, and easily concealed. I wish I had never sold it. :(

Does Newt still produce the NRG? If so, I'll probably get another one.

I have a bunch of Newt's stuff- best bang for the buck out there- period. His knives perform as well or better than knives @ 2 or 3 x the price. True, Newt's a little behind the 8-ball right now, but he's working hard to get back to 100%- Give his neckers a shot- you can't go wrong w/ a Wicked knife.

The cord wrapped woo, with its kydex sheath is the best deal on the face of the planet. You might have to touch up the edge yourself a bit as Newt does not spend a lot of time doing the final sharpen, but they are sweet. I also have the little sop neck knife but the woo is really the best of any I have ever seen, and I own several neck knives from a variety of makers and or knife companies. I have a feeling though that if he does not have it in stock you might wait a while, but he tends to deal the standard and cord wrapped woo in volume, so you might be ok.

The NGR is a non-steel knife, the NGRS is 1095 steel, and Newt still has both in production. I've got both, and their big brothers, a Company knife and the US Marshal. Like Rugger said, Newt's been dealin' with some of the problems of Job, so it's best to leave him a message on his forum site and he'll get back to you. Make sure you leave him a good email addy.

I have used one for two years now and love it. The knife
is thin and light. It has a cord wrab and I like the
slightly curved blade. Yes, the price is right.

I have Newt's SOP. Butt ugly but it sure does perform. Newt and company build great bang for the buck knives.

The Woo is a great neck knife for the price. It is thin and light, has a great sheath, and it doesn't print even under a t-shirt. For $25, what have you got to lose?! Newt is a little behind schedule, but if you give him a call he will take care of you. For 25 bucks it's one hell of a bargain.

I have been carrying one of his Air Assaults and it is an excellent mid length fixed blade. Mine went through a lot of use before it had to be sharpened. It has one of the most comfortable handles ever. It is a real workhorse that will do it all.

Newt makes great knives that are worth WAY more than what he charges. Right now he is moving his shop and he's backlogged, etc., but if you are interested you should definitely give him a call and see what he can do for you.

I too own and use lots of Newt's knives. Unbeatable value for the dollar, and even with price not an issue, very good quality knives.
