The upper part of the Buffalo National River runs through Newton County Arkansas, below is a picture of my BK2 with a Azwelke sheath mounted on the ESEE rig. The other pictures are of the Buffalo River area. I hope everyone gets to visit the Buffalo River and Northwest Arkansas someday.

I am a subscriber to the Newton County Times, the latest edition:

That's a nice set up for the 2. I am guessing the pictures do nothing to describe how amazing that wilderness looked.

looks good!
at one point several of us talked about doing the buffalo river on yaks & canoes - then life got in the way.
maybe we should start talking about doing that again.

I think so too. Maybe this year. It's an awesome place.

The picture below is from 2005. This was the first trip my future wife and I took, right along the Buffalo in Arkansas.

Don't eat this stuff I found off the Buffalo River Trail, it smells funny:

Look closely at the center of the pic for a large creature:

you mean it's bad when I tell newbies that those are wild jellybeans?

This is my neighborhood. Almost. About an hour from me. I spend a lot of time hiking, camping, and floating out there. Tons of trails, waterfalls, and stuff to do. Lost Valley is a definite must see if you are in the area. The trail starts out nice and smooth but gets steep at the end. It terminates at a cave. If you crawl into the cave and make your way back you are greeted by a 30 foot tall waterfall inside the cave. Not far from there is another waterfall (Hemmed in Hollow, 209' +/- tall) that is a mother to get to, but well worth the steep steep hike in and out. There is another route that is about 6 or 8 miles round trip, IIRC, but with ten river crossings- not doable this time of year when the water starts to really flow. If you havent, check out Tim Ersnt's books, The Arkansas Nature Lover's Guidebook, and the Arkansas Waterfall guidebook. I keep both of them in my SUV for when I get a wild hair. If you all cant tell, this place is like Disney Land to me. :D

jonc123, I just now saw the Comton Trailhead sign picture you posted (comp running slow today). You know the falls I am talking about, then. ;) I might go out there this weekend to get humbled again.

Absolutely stunning terrain man!!! My back yard is the Natural Bridge/Red River Gorge area here in KY, and that place reminds me of it very much. Great pics!

Awesome pics! The one with the old truck body in the woods is excellent, would look great in a frame. Looks like beautiful country, I drove through the area once many years ago, but didn't have a chance to get out and see it close up. Thank you for posting.

I had the pleasure of staying near Mountain Home many years ago. I vowed to return, but haven't been able to yet. It's stunning country up there. Bull Shoals Lake is beautiful!

Plan ahead when heading to any of these areas in Arkansas....lots of federal campgrounds are closed and many have limited services because of the government shutdowns. Same probably goes for everywhere. You'll see the other campgrounds, state parks & private campgrounds filling up quicker because of this. Some of the roads around the buffalo river are rough; expect them to get worse with the lack of funds to maintain them.

Maurice...I have 4 or 5 of Tim's books. They are wonderful. If you have the National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map, wife and I have hiked & backpacked every marked trail on it, including the roads marked in brown. I have also hiked the entire 225 mile Ouachita Trail with my wife. Wonderful country!!

bsmith_shoot... We took a trip to the Natural Bridge/Red River Gorge area and the Big South Fork a couple years ago. All those areas are just wonderful.

I know several folks who just have to go backpacking in Colorado (or a big mountain state) every year. They won't even think of taking a backpacking trip in Missouri. I try to explain to them that we have wonderful places right here! They never listen.

I do have that map. Best 10 bucks I ever spent. I have yet to do all of them, but dammit I am trying. :D

Wow those pictures are incredible, the 3rd one down from the top is just a crazy view. Makes me so anxious for winter to end so I can get out there into the forests. And the old auto cars mixed with primitive architecture gives this park a kind of frozen-in-time feeling. Definitely put on my list of places I'd like to venture out to one day
