The original was made with 1095. The New Generation uses 12C27 which requires precise heat treating near the "top of the curve" to bring out the best of this swedish stainless. Unfortunately word I've heard is that the heat treating is sub optimum and hence so is the blade. YMMV
Yeah, Bob's got it. The New Generation uses steel that won't perform as well as 1095, and yet charges 3x the price. You can get an old-style 1095 version with kraton instead of leather handles, maybe that's a compromise you might want to look at, if you like kraton.
