I've been digging through old posts reading what you all have written about Sirupati khukuris. I'm looking at this being my next purchase. You know, for when the zombies come :D
I'd like to hear more of your thoughts on this design. Which length you prefer, what handle material, which makers excel at this one.
Thanks.

The Siru is a great choice. It's funny, as I mentioned to Andy in my ASTK thread, that particular knife really would function the same as it is scaled up in size. However, the Siru is kind of the opposite:D

A little siru of 12" is going to a very light and concealable knife (not much chopping power). A 15" is going to float and glide through the air. I believe our good friend Sarge carried one on one his last tours through The Sandbox. A 20" is just about perfect for clearing brush, taking out trees of 3"-4" (easily), or lopping the head and limbs off the undead:D A 25" siru is going to be more sword-like than anything (good if the zombies come clad in chainmail). Our late great mod Rusty used to have a THIRTY inch version that he would swing in figure 8's to stretch out his back:p

It's a common and straight forward design that pretty much all the kami's can make really well. I'd be more concerned with figuring out do you want a light fighter or a chunky chopper. You can't beat the Siru:thumbup:

I just picked up a Bura 18" sirupati. Love it. Very lively and oh-so-sharp.
(Discussed ad-nauseum in a previous post.)

I carry my 20" Sirupati more then any other Khukri. IMO it's a great combination of length, speed and cutting power. As Jake mentioned, it will cut down trees (8 to 9 inch aspens and Elms), clear brush or split water mellons.

I used to have one.

Funny story.

There was some knives on DOTD and I ordered one.

Well when it came along came a 15" Siru that was on the same DOTD.

Now this was when Uncle Bill was alive and I emailed him and said I was going to send it back.

He emailed me back and said.

Keep the Sirupate and think well of us

:D:D:D:D:D:D

Well I did keep it for a long time and my wife liked it. The Siru is deceptive. It looks like it would be too light- but was a great chopper for stuff up to about 5"!!!!:thumbup:

However over time I've got a few free khuks from HI and one of the important things is if somebody gives you good karma, you double it by passing it on. So when a young fellow I know was admiring my khuks and he was into martial arts too I gifted him with the siru.

Several years later his wife emailed me and remarked she had gone camping and how great it was for gathering firewood.

So yeah they chop better than you think and I wanted to repeat this story because the mention of a Siru always brings back what good memories and feelings I have for Uncle Bill and Yangdu!

Yeah, Uncle Bill was the best.

Once upon a time I was a poor college kid and had ordered a khuk. Some how, there was a mix up and I was sent a second order. This was during a time when I was moving back to my home town from college. It sat at the Bowling Green Kentucky post office for the better part of 2 months before somehow it was forwarded to my mom's address. I wrote Uncle Bill and told him what happen and apologized for looking like a deadbeat that stole knives that didn't belong to me.

"Thank you for your honesty. Keep it and think well of us."

Over my time on these boards I've had 50 or 60 HI products pass through my hands. I might have 20 or 30 pieces for use, collection, and special meaning. I've never sold an HI piece. It doesn't seem right. These are blades you pass on when Karma moves you to do so....that's just my opinion though.

Edit to add: Just dawned on me. The surplus knife that Uncle Bill let me keep....a 12" Siru:D

I have two sirupatis:

20.25" by Bura
25" by Vim

I prefer the one made by Bura. Decent chopping power and lightning fast.
