Based on what Burt Foster quoted me quite a few months ago my turn is suppose be coming up soon. This will be my third Foster knife with the first two being a Blue Collar Camp knife and Blue Collar Hunter

What to do? I want another large knife (or at least large to me) 9-10" blade. Sorting looking to do something with a different twist but with similar use as the Camp knife. Not spotting anything yet that at least give me a starting point with Burt so he can turn my thought into one of his practical attractive visions. I guess I would like to improve on the Combative side of the knife without loosing the chopping ability my Camp knife has given me. Something with a lively feel to the blade but enough mass to do Camp knife chores. I've always thought a knife used for thrusting should have a guard of some sort so I like to see one on the knife. Something sculpted but not to ornate! Possibly a pommel of some sort also!

Appreciate any input and pictures.

and a personal favorite!

Maybe a recurved camp configuration?

He had done some with his unique guards lately, I think there is an example or two on his website.

Get a hamon! Also, might consider some sculpted damascus for the guard with some grooves, nice, but not over the top.

You didn't mention what price point you expect to come in at, that changes a lot!

Best Regards,

i believe that burt likes to start from just a few specifications. what you wrote here may be already enough for him to come out with some excellent designs.

last time i ordered a knife from burt i didn't specify a lot of details, just the outlines of the design, as i didn't know exactly what i wanted :o the result is great, in my opinion.

i'd be reluctant to choose a recurve blade as it's a pain to resharpen with a stone. but as steven said, a hardening line is almost a must. burt's control of it is stupefying...

please send some pictures when you get the knife!

I don't recall whise picture this is, but I think this one would fit the bill nicely.

Or on a smaller scale:

Or better yet, one of each in a matched set!

I have an order coming up soon with Burt as well - for a large integral with active hamon. Should be sweet.

I recently picked up this box elder burl hunter from Burt. I have seen a lot of his work on the forums, but finally had a chance to actually handle several of his blades at Blade this year, and I was impressed.
He said this was the first drop point hunter in which he included a finger groove. It gives a great feel to the knife. You might want to have him include some similar grooving on a larger knife like you are wanting?

Guys, It mind sound crazy to some but I'm using both the blue collor hunter and Camp knife. The hunter is on my hip in special horizontal sheath Burt designed as an EDC knife. The Camp knife has been use quite a bit in clearing trails and limbs in the area I hunt and on my hip everytime I go to the farm. I've need a larger knife at times and the only thing I had was a cheap machete which never was around when I needed it. The Camp knife is about the right size with a sheath design that makes it a joy to carry. Both take an outstanding edge and keep through a lot of use. This was my first trip into this level of expertise.

I was thinking around $1000 at the max but I might go a little more if there is something in design process with Burt that seems the knife cannot be without. Again, I really like the Camp knife and would simply like to improve the combative (don't know why) side of it without destroying the utility. I would like to try another steel type (W2, 52100) that hopefully improve up the edge holding. With the guard I'm simply hoping to add something that seems practical on combative side and would allow some attractive embelishment. Either the type of material use, sculpting of the material, or possibly both done in such a way that again the utility nature of the piece is not flawed by my wants.

Seems to me based on some of the reading I've done these larger knives (Bowie in particular) were a tool first and weapon second. I'm not expecting the best of both worlds because its seems to me an almost impossible task to create lively fighting knife and an excellent utility (Camp knife) knife. Again, I guess I'm simply thinking improvement on the fighting knife side without destroying a great camp knife.

Again,

I've found this style handle design very comfortable in the hand. I did order (but sold) a knife from another maker whose work I liked simply because the handle felt awkward in my hand.

Do you have any idea of the blade length on this knife?

My turn has come and I'm getting an integral dagger, with a wide blade. Burt is great to work with.

I can't say for sure, but 10" long and just under 2" wide would be my edjamacated guess. I have held more than one of Burt's knives with a similar handle design and find them extremely comfortable and very secure.

Might want to consider sheeps horn. Turned my blue collar hunter into something decidedely un-blue collar. I was amazed at how little it added to the cost for this extremely practical blade.

It's a great handle material- tough, grippy, and easy to see if you drop it.

I have a matched set! Blue Collar Camp knife and Blue Collar hunter in sheep horn. Actually want something a little different this different this time in handle material. What? Don't know! The sheep horn looks attractive and the texture of it will definitely the imperfections I had to it pretty well. Would definitely like find something tough that did hide the imperfections well.
