Here's my collection so far ;

Fixed ;

KA-BAR Next Generation
KA-BAR D2 Extreme
KA-BAR Full Tanto
KA-BAR Fin

Folding ;

CRKT-M16 10KZ
CRKT-M16
Benchmade Gold Shoki
Benchmade 10300 Monochrome

Should I get a fixed or folding for the next knife?

Budget is up to $300.

Depends on what you do for a living and what your prominent hobbies are. I only have two good fixed blades, and many folders.

So I vote folder.

You need a spyderco.
or what about a neck knife or a good multitool?

If you like spyderco the new manix 2 orange G10 sprint run is selling very fast, wish i had some extra $$ for one.

Wny not mix it up and get some utility style EDC knives?
If you want a Benchmade knife, stay below 1000, in other words, get a 950, or a 556, or something. Browse the online stores, look at the pictures, see if anything grabs your attention.

Stay away from the M16 knives unless you feel the need to sharpen your knife after each use. Nothing wrong with Ka-Bar, but come on...mix it up a litte. Buy a ZT, Spyderco, Kershaw, Cold Steel, something. There are other brands out there.

This.

Benchmade 556 is a good choice, Or you could go zt/kershaw and get a zt 350 or a junkyard dog.

It's nice to try out different brands and see what they have to offer.

Do yourself a favor -- save up another $30 and get a plain Sebenza.

You need to round out that kabar collection with several of the models that you don't have....

Baconmaker
Potbelly
Any of the classic leather handled blades

Benchmade grips and ZT Ti frame locks are great .

But I 2nd the Sebenza !!

Handle one and compare to all of the mentioned ,you'll see;)

I've yet to handle a sebenza, it's a good thing since i'ts probably saving me money.

You have the right idea with the KaBars (IMO). May I suggest a KaBar Becker? Maybe a nice BK-2 for full-on wood processing goodness and general all around mayhem or BK-11 for an always-with-you neck knife?

I collect mainly folders and just enjoy/use them more in general so I vote folder as well. I'd wait a little while and get a Kershaw Tilt once they come out. :D ....or get a higher end Spyderco-you won't be disappointed.

Used: Sebenza or Strider (may be a bit more than $300 if you want big one)

New: ZT0551 (or ZT0200, cheaper but heavier)

You absolutely cannot go wrong with a ZT 0551. They are limited to a thousand units so get one while you can.

As others have suggested, I'd recommend picking up some good folders. And given that your collection is still rather small (by BladeForums standards! :p ), rather than spending all of your $300 budget on one knife, you might get multiple knives in the $30-150 range instead. There are a lot of quality knives out there, even at the low end of that range, so just browse a bit and see what strikes your fancy. But to get you started, here are a handful of venerable models that every knife user/collector should, if not own, at least check out at some point...

Spyderco: Delica, Endura, Military, Para-Military, Sage, Tenacious

Kershaw: Leek, Blur, Skyline, JYD II Composite, any Zero Tolerance knife

Benchmade: Griptilian (in its many variants), 710, 940, 950

Spyderco military or ZT, you seem to be missing those ;)
