I've been struggling to choose among several knives. In my previous thread I got lots of good information and began thinking along slightly different lines. After doing some reading about 440V steel on the general discussion forum and checking out the Wegner model, I'm having second thoughts about what I was thinking to buy next.

new thoughts:
*I do want a combo edge.
*The 440V seems less an issue now.
*Silly though it may seem, the Wegner is not pleasing to my eye, but has the combo edge, a useful blade shape and lots of endorsements.
*While looking over Spyderco's product line, I saw the Wayne Goddard (C16)....combo edge, pleasing style and Gin-1 steel which I like.
Question... Is it in the same league with the Military and Starmate? If not how far off? Will it hold up to general purpose use as weel as either of the aforementioned.
The truth is that the disease is really taking hold of me. I want them all....

I don't have a Wayne G. so I can't answer that part directly. I do want to comment on the Wegner thing though.

I first saw the Wegner on-line. I liked it right away. I liked what I read about it on knifecenter.com. But a couple months went by before a big gun show came and I could handle one. That was a revelation. The knife fit right into my hand. It wasn't too big to carry. And opening and closing it was amazing for somebody who had never owned a liner lock. The incredible smoothness combined with the solid clunk of it locking was addictive. I knew this was a must have knife. I managed to put it off until I could order it online. A friend ordered one for me along with an order he was making to Top of Texas knives. He opened it up when the order came and played around with it. When I came over to pick it up his comment was, "That is the ugliest knife I've ever seen." He is a Benchmade person who doesn't like the hole but I was still surprised. I think the curves and the deep hollow grind blade are beautiful.

Anyway, my advice would be to find some way to handle one. You may discover that it doesn't look so ugly anymore. And it is so practical. I haven't cleaned any deer since I got mine either but I have cut a lot of stuff around the yard that needed cutting. It is a great knife!

I have spent alot of money in search of a folder that I would love. I bought alot of folders, Spyderco and others, because they were aesthetically pleasing. While the fit and finish on most were excellent, they didnt feel real good to use. Especially for any hard work or for extended periods of use. I was discussing my dilema with my good friend Chris, of Top of Texas knives. He said " have you considered the Wegner?" I told him that I hadn't. I really didn't like the way it looked. Chris told me about how the handle melts into your hand. He told me how the knife feels better to use than most folders. Chris is extremely knowledgable about knives and I trust him implicitly. I told him I would give it a try. A few days later I had my Wegner, comboedge in hand. Chris was right. This knife feels good. The knife begs to be used and abused. I guess what I am trying to say, besides plug the wegner, is be careful about buying a knife based on looks. Buying on looks can be OK if you are looking for a gentleman's knife or a collectible that probably wont be used. If you want a user then go for function over form. Ideally you could go to a knife store and handle the knives before you buy and get a feel for them. But if you are like me there are no knife stores locally that stock alot of knives.
Good luck and let us know what you decide.

And there it is folks!
Let your hand do the deciding and not your eyes when it comes to a working folder. After all it's not your eyes that are going to get blistered from a pretty looking folder that feels like crap in the hand!

The Wegner in plain edge is my favorite and most carried Spyderco linerlock. It is indeed very ergonomic and will still work well with gloves on. The larger than normal finger groove allows for a secure grip. The full stainless spacer adds heft and will aid in pommel strikes if necessary. The uniformly thick spine and thinly ground blade makes for a srong yet SHARP folder. ATS 34 steel and G 10 scales are a plus, a consideration for outdoor use. Enjoy.

After reading all the advice I got, including that from Joe Talmadge, I've decided to go with two knives....one with a plain edge and the other with a serrated edge. To stay within my current budget, I'll compromise and get a Native (35/65%-plain/spyderedge) and a plain edge Starmate. Going this route will allow me to buy a Sharpamker set as well. Later I'll get a Military (plain edge or spyderedge-a new question). I'm going to have to handle a Wegner before I buy one. I've only seen pictures so far. Thanks to all andof course I'm still open to suggestion.
