Next step for sharpening?

Hey guys, in the last few months I have learned to actually sharpen. I can sharpen a knife to shave well and push cut paper off of my DMT 325 grit stone, then to strops with dremel compound and another with jewellers rouge, then finally to plain leather. I want a more refined edge off my stones though. What should be my next grit progression? My uncle has a Smith's 750 grit diamond stone he doesn't use, should I try to secure that from him, or should I just buy the DMT bench stones, specifically Red and Green(600 & 1200 IIRC). Then what kind of an edge should I expect off those grits with my stropping process? Im learning here, so every little bit of advice helps, thank you all for your help -Lucas

I'm in the same position. I go from a 400 grit stone to a strop. I have been thinking that a 1k would be the next step but I'm no expert.

OP, stick with the DMT's it will keep things consistent.

Neverdie, are you using diamond hones or other types of stones?

Sounds like your Uncle's stone would work fine to get a more refined edge. Saves you the money, then you can buy a another stone with the money saved :)

Knifenut1013, thanks for that, I'm gonna have to save a few more pennies to get some new stones but I surely will get the DMTs when I have the coin

The Smith's 750 is a respectable stone, I'd try it before buying anything more. It makes a pretty nice edge, perfect for every day usage, a bit rough for finer work. Am not sure what the Dremel compound is, but probably aluminum oxide. Give it a light touch on the strops following the Smith's fine and it should be a noticeable jump from what you're used to, depending on the steel you're working.
