I'm saving for my next big knife purchase, so am open to suggestions.

Right now I have two small sebenzas and love them. What I'm looking for is the next step up.

--budget $400-$600

--handle should be about the same size as the small sebenza (about 4")

--blade shape: I love the insigno, but am open

--no flippers. I really don't like those for some reason

--no traditionals. I need a clip and one handed opening

Obviously, same or better quality than the sebenza.

Any suggestions? I was looking at the Spartan Akribis but it's too big. Any custom makers to look at in that price range (I already have a Terzuola).

I've been down this road a few times...always come back to Sebenza.

William Henry is a good start. They're all too small for me, but may be just right for you. They're probably the closest rival to CRK quality.

It seems like there are plenty of custom knives out there in that size/price range. Maybe try the custom & knife maker exchanges for something that speaks to you? Chuck Gedraitis has a really nice one on there now.

The only other knives (near that price) I've found to rival a sebenza (in quality, fit & finish) are the Les George VECP, Hinderer and the Shirogorov folders. The VECP and Shirogorov's are much heavier than a large 21, so that pretty much rules them out. But, a little XM18 in 3'' or 3.5'', non flipper slicer grind may suit the bill. Like Sonnydaze, I always end up coming back to the Sebenza; 8 out of 10 times, they are the ones that get carried. Oddly enough though, it was a Microtech Combat Troodon in the rotation today - so much fun to open mail with!!

damn you guys have fat wallets.

Not exactly in your budget, but if you save up another $200 you can get into a Rockstead Hizen :)

Extremely high quality and about the same size as a small Seb, you're gonna have a hard time beating CRK quality without going custom :)

That Rockstead is gorgeous, but a little pricey for me, esp. as an edc. Not in that league yet.

I would love to try a Hinderer 3" slicer. I assume I'll find one in the same year I win the Nobel Prize. Impossible to find.

Any custom knifemakers you would recommend?

Sounds like you have found your knife. I have a small sebbie insingo and nothing is likely to unseat it IN THAT SIZE RANGE.

I also really like my CRK Small Sebenza with Insingo Blade!

For something different try the William Henry B12 Atlas Spearpoint Folding Knife with thumb stud and clip. The 3" blade is ZDP-189 core stainless (HRC 67) and the satin-finish titanium handle is 4". It uses a button lock like many from WH. It's a limited edition run of 888 pieces.

I'll second Tighe. Maybe check into Strider. The SNG should fit your wants pretty well.

William Henry E 10. Kicked the sebenza out of my pocket. Or you could go for the E6 if size is a concern. The E10 is only 1.7 ounces

I have a WH E10-3 EDC and it is indeed a great lightweight folder. However, since it has a 3.4" blade I don't carry it due to being mostly within L.A.'s city limits. The E6 EDC is also nice and you save $50 but the blade is only 2.75" while I like using the full 3". Ergo, I have a B12 Atlas Spearpoint incoming with an exact 3" blade. It's about an ounce heavier than the EDC line.
