Thanks for the help last week getting the wave draw worked out. I've got it now. The key was springing out the clip a little. It was grabbing to tight and making smooth control during the draw impossible. I ended up seteling on the "index finger curled around the end of the clip" grip.

I've been trying to put a better edge on the knife . I purchased the diamond stick hone shown in the emmerson web site sharpening tutorial and have followed those instructions to the letter. The knife still does not feel very sharp. I also did a search here on BF and noted several comments to the effect of "its sharp but does not feel that way".

That being the case how to you guage how sharp the knife is? It fails the paper slicing test....rip, slice, rip, rip slice, tear. It wont shave arm hair. Any Ideas?

If it's hair shaving you want, I've found that if you flip the knife over and shave bevel side down, they'll usually shave.

As to testing the edge . . . run your thumb across the edge with a little pressure. :D

John, that ain't funny. I got my SOCFK and did that cause not using any pressure, it felt dull. I have these cool scars on the pad of my thumb. Oh well, new Emersons mean bring on the band aids.

I've noticed that if you run your thumb across the edge on the flat side of the blade, it feels rougher than on the beveled side. Also, my '98 was shaving sharp when I got it.

Clayton,

So is that test a good way to measure point sharpness and penetration ability? :p

Mine is shaving sharp but doesnt feel like it. I use a diamond rod and the technique that you describe. Take your time while doing it and really watch where you guide the rod. It usually takes me a while, certainly more than the 4 minutes that it says on the website.
Good luck, enjoy your knife!
