John,

I have the same phone. My work pays for it so it doesn't cost me anything. It has email features that I really like. It sends me pages, weather, stock quotes and important email messages forwarded from my office mail system.

I got the wife one so we can communicate using the direct connect feature. I really like the phone and service. I recently went to Maui and took my phone there. Not knowing what to expect, I was supprised to see that it got good reception in most of the island (direct connect didn't work there).

Like you, I had Sprint PCS and hated the service!

Good luck with the Nextel!

My daughter left for her first year of college this weekend, and because they haven't installed the phone in her apartment yet, I'm communicating with her by the "Direct Connect" 2-way radio feature.

She is just over 230 miles away. Pretty nifty, IMO!

We have three Nextel i1000+ phones in the family. I am also part of an "Automotive Group" that originally had about six identical Nextel phones (used to be known as "Mike" phones in Canada, before Clearnet was bought out by Telus Communications), primarily to use the 2-way feature. EVERY person in the group has gotten rid of their phones - complaining of ATROCIOUS service (ie. the quality of the cellular transmissions). My kids are always complaining about poor cellular service (but we're keeping the phones because of the 2-way feature).

Personally, I don't think its our phones that are at fault - like ALL Motorola phones (and I've had about 14 of them), they are bullet-proof. I think the poor cellular transmission quality is the fault of an uncaring, uninterested service provider who has signed up all the users they can handle (mostly for the 2-way feature, so they figure they can live with the poor cellular quality)

I believe there's a new Nextel 12000+ available now? If there is, I'll upgrade. Go figure.;)

So far I have found the cell quality to be on par with my old Sprint phone. I kinda live out in the sticks, pretty far from civilized folk (just me, the Deer and the Gators) and I have only had a couple of bum calls.

I'm still finding new damn features. :D That online Phone list/Address book updating SMOKES!

They do have an i2000 out, but in talking with the Nextel service folks, there is a new model on the horizon. Basically it's a cross between the i1000 and the i2000. Java features in a flip phone style. I figure I'll trade up then.

Redesigned i1000. Luckly I got one of the older (better looking) syle</center>

Speaking of the Service folks, I have to sing their praises. When I got the phone, the Internet feature wasn't working properly. I called, was placed on hold for not over two minutes and the problem was solved in under five.

I also had a question while browsing their web site and hit the "Contact me" button. You put in your phone number and when it would be convenient for them to call you. I clicked on "Now" and in about ten seconds my phone was ringing . . . in the middle of the afternoon! So far I'm pretty damn impressed.

Yes, the "Service" people have been excellent as long as we've owned these phones - it's the "service" in the city that leaves a lot to be desired! I just wanted to reach my daughter again using the "Direct Connect" - and found I had NO service at all for about 20 minutes! No 2-way, no cellular. I find that unacceptable from a National service provider. As I mentioned, my friends with Nextel i1000+ phones are discarding them right and left but I don't believe the phones are at fault here. We DO like that "Direct Connect" so I guess we're sticking with them. Maybe I'll get that i2000 tomorrow and see if the improved phone can make better use of the crappy service.
