Edge:

I don't think that Chris makes any knives himself anymore. They are made buy a couple of knifemakers that he trained to make his knives. They are not considered custom but they are 75-80% hand made under the close supervision of Chris and I think he does the final tweaking and inspection before the knives are shipped. Nice knives, very sharp and built like a tank!

Thanks for the response! I have a regular sebenza great knife, I just thought since there was only 400 made that reeve made the tanto himself.Thats ok still I am sure it is going to be a tank thats for sure!!!

Scottdog pretty well says it! Chris oversees all the processes and inspects every knife that leaves the shop but he does not actually grind the blades or do the actual assembly any longer.

EDGE1 - Today's the day, yeah? You're going to be pretty stoked....The Tanto Large is a cool knife. I have one, and I'll more than likely call Dave Harvey of Nordic and have him send me up a small.

Jonny - How's it going out there, bud? Hope Mother Nature's giving you guys a break for a change!

Taking care of that "teeny tanto" one piece? Oh, I checked out your country's knife forum. You're right. Lots of Chinese going on. I did need a couple of aspirin after that!

Anne - In what year did your husband phase himself out of the actual knifemaking part of the business. If I recall, it was a gradual process.

one happy sebenza owner!!
P.S I think it is time to put away my cqc6 by emerson but ssshhh dont tell the guys over there! LOL

Glad you like your tanto. Awesome isn't it? I have often thought of comparing the CRK tanto with a an Emerson custom. I have a production CQC 7, left handed. This is my second one. The first one I bought, when I opened it, it took a screwdriver to close it so I sent it back and got a refund. After a few months I relented and got another. The one I have seems to operate well. The Emersons seem to be designed for one purpose, that being self defense and there is nothing wrong with that. I have a CQC 5 left hand on order from Emerson, I got my name in before Ernie announced his semi-retirement. I may get it in five years. My thinking and my observations by following both the Emerson section of Blade Forum and the Cris Reeve section of Blade Forum is that in the Emerson section, it is not difficult to find a thread where a customer has recieved a product that is not right (as in my experience with my first CQC 7). Even John Holister has described the quality of a custom CQC 6 as somewhat spotty. In the Chris Reeve section, you would be hard pressed to find a customer that is less than thrilled. Also material wise, the CQC 6 has a CPM 154 blade, micarta scales and is a liner lock. The CRK tanto has a BG-42 blade (superior in my opinion), titanium scales and a frame lock. It carries easier in my pocket than my CQC 7 and the double bevel of the CRK NICA tanto makes everyday chores a cinch. Lockup on the blade is like a vault and the thing is made like a tank. Granted the CRK can't claim to be "custom", but in my opinion it is a superior knife. Anyone out there care to put in their two cents about this matter?

Scott Dog ,I agree with you The sebenza is a much better knife in many aspects as you mentioned above.I have a couple of emersons production knives and a customCQC6 as i mentioned above, But there is somthing just cool about having the emerson custom, call it a trend or whatever you wish LOL,I just always wanted one and when one was in my grasp i grabbed it. The lock up on it is not the best, but it is a great blade,But Again the sebenza is still far supiror!the lock up, materials, size and feel!
I love it !!!

Al, It was in July 1998 that Chris exhibited at the Guild Show without any of the Chris Reeve Knives range of knives. It had been during the preceding 18 months that the gradual change over took place, as Scott and Bryan took over finish grinding and assembly.

Thank you, Anne! I'm glad to hear that my '93 Sebenza was crafted for the most part by The Man himself....

Hi, Boy they are awfully neat!! I have one and they catch my attention with their beautiful design and clean looking lines. They have a style all their own. I have not used mine though. I think the blade would hold up to quite a bit because of its design. Sure one neat knife!!!
