I'm moving short term for work and bringing my wife with me. She loves to cook and continues to impress me with her skill. I'd like to get here a simple set of knives she can use at home or when we move short term. she generally cooks with a 5-6" blade chef's knife and a 4" blade paring knife.

I'm considering the Benchmade 4502 3-piece set (440c, G10, and a wood carrying case). The set is nice, but I'd rather not spend the $350 retail if I could get an equivalent set for less. What should I be looking at here? If the Benchmade set is the best, I'll happily buy it.

$139.95

F-800 3" Paring Knife
F-802 6" Utility Knife
F-808 8" Chef Knife

Considered to be one of the best lines as an introduction to Japanese knives, the DP series is constructed with a core of VG-10 stainless steel sandwiched between a layer of softer stainless for ease of sharpening. This line is constructed with a Black Stamina wood handle and stainless steel bolster. These knives are known for their superior performance for the price. This 3 piece set includes: The 90mm Paring knife (F-800) is the perfect knife for detail cutting or peeling fruits and vegetables. The 150mm Utility knife (F-202) is just that; the perfect all-around kitchen multi-tasker. It can be used to peel larger fruits and vegetables or even as a small slicer for meat like roasted pork tenderloins or chicken breasts. The 210mm Gyuto (F-808) is hands down, the most popular knife amongst home cooks. It is the perfect size for the home kitchen or when cutting board real estate is at a premium. It is the all-around multi-tasking blade and great for so many jobs. All three knives are shipped to you in an attractive gift box

get this and you're good to go.

the same steel as shuns, at a fraction of the cost

if you wanna spend even less you can get the tramontina damascus 5 pc. set

Tramontina Damascus 5 Piece Cutlery Knife Set with In-drawer Block
Razor sharp fine edge
Solid stainless steel bolster
Damascus steel 66 layers VG 10 steel
Fully tampered steel core

also same steel as both the shun and tojiro, at about half the cost of the tojiro

and has more knives. comes with a drawer block for storage.

i'd get either one of these.

the tramontinas are noticeable thicker than the tojiros or shuns. but for the price, you really cannot say no to them.

a lot better steel than 440c and will stay sharp longer. a little harder to sharpen than 440c though.
