like the subject says... i hate being so vague, but i'm not sure what i'm after. i want to start whittling/carving for kicks, and would like to pick up the "best" knife for it, in the under-$30 range (are they much more than that?). blade/handle materials and length aren't really a factor. maybe i'm a big dummy, and any ol' sub-2" plain blade will work... i'd just like to know what you all are using. thanks so much!

My favorite whittler is a Victorinox Pocket Pal. You should be able to pick one up for $10 - $15.

Check out the Schrade line of Old Timer knives. Their carbon steel takes a great edge and, once dull, re-sharpens easily. They make a nice sized three-blade stockman that's great for what you're after.

Folder- Old Timer stockman
Fixed- Frosts of Sweden Mora
Look around and you could probably get one of each for around $30.00 combined.

Go Old Timer. They take a beating and are easily resharpened.

For $30. . .you can get at least 2. :)

Old Timer Middleman. You'll need to put a "real edge" on it, but its worth the effort. Dirt cheap too.

I have three Old Timers and they all get rotated rather frequently. Another good pick may be the Buck Cadet. Although it isn't carbon steel it serves the whittlin' function rather well.

I recommend a search on "whittling", as there were some nice threads on this before.

I like my old Schrade stockman and my Opinel 7, I also use an X-acto set.

outstanding! thanks for all the great suggestions. my wife's on my case now: thanks to this thread i've just bought 2 more knives (and i've got my eye on a few more...

i picked up a cheapie SAK Rally (i don't know that this will be a whittler per se, but while looking at worthy candidates i spied this which would be nice on my keys :D).

i decided on the Old Timer Stockman to start my "official" whittling adventure. i also dug up an Opinel 6 that a friend handed off to me a while back, but the tang/handle relationship seems kinda flimsy. i'll have to go easy on it.

one of the others i'm looking at is the Mora you mentioned, as well as the Case Whittler.

most of you will scoff at this, but i've only got 10 knives to my name (well, after adding the latest two). Four of those have been purchased since i've joined this forum. i can see this is hopeless: i may as well start planning on building an entire house out of knives!

I had less than that when I joined. I have lost track since of how many I have bought, sold, traded or given away. Good choice on the Old Timer and that Opinel will surprise you. Have fun and welcome to the madness.
