Just received this. From what I can find it is a CM-17 Mediterranean Barlow from, I think, the 1990's. Really nice stag on this one. The locking mechanism is what I think would be called a side release. The backspring locks the blade like a normal lockback bur the lock is released by pivoting one of the scales downward at the rear so there is no visible lock release.

Blade 2 1/2" length closed is about 3 3/8 - 3 1/2" Unsure of blade steel but it is probably AUS-8

I have always liked A. G.'s modern take on traditional designs. He tweaks them just the right amount that it has a newer flavor, but undeniably traditional style.

Sounds like a cool locking mechanism, as well.

Looks like some small gaps on the backsprings, and something funky going on around the spot where the blade tip sits in closed position.

Still, the stag looks excellent. And I have a strong interest in unusual locking and opening mechanisms. Funny I don't recall seeing that model before. I'll have to keep an eye open for one.

I've noticed that AG does three things consistently.

1. Squeezes the most blade possible into the frame.
2. Improves classic designs to make them better, as well as uniquely his.
3. Delivers amazing quality at the price point.

I'm still trying to plan a stop by his store in Arkansas.

It has a very Gallic look about it, like something by Le Thiers Chambriard.

Have to say I'm never a fan of antler scales so 'flared'.

As stated that lock is very unique and a brilliant way to ensure the clean lines of this knife.

Thanks for the comments. I believe that this model originally came out as one of AG Russels KCC knives (Cattaraugus marked?) with jigged brown bone scales, then made it into the catalog with other scale materials. This model is no longer cataloged - I got this one from the on line auction ( for $50.00 shipped which I believe was a good price)

yes; some gaps around the back spring. Not as bad as when enlarged by the camera but they are there.

as far as something funky at the blade tip - I believe that is reflection picked up by the camera - when open there are no marks whare the blade sits and no evidence that the blade is contacting the bottom ( on either the edge or the bottom of the opening).

Not quite as bad as it appears in the photo but they are flared at the end ( a little more than I prefer also) but I can live with it. If I decide to carry it I may thin them down a just little at the rear.

looks like the gaps are mostly between the "scale liner" and "frame liner." which may be somewhat inherent as the two must move relative to one another.

Additional photos including ones showing the scale pivoted to unlock.
