nice craftsman

Very nice! Dangit! Looks like it's taken from the 49ers series.

 You got that right, I had that marked to watch also, wonder what they sold for new? Calling Codger:D

Great looking set, the handle looks very similar in ergonomic shape to the 165UH.

Here's a link to a staglon version of the 49er knives that this knife seems to have been made from.

They were also available with the leather washer handles but I can't find a pic. I believe Larry303 has some photos from his collection on Collectors of Schrades R Us, I'll see if I can dig up a link.....

Larry, glad they were only on page five! LOL

i think it's a 148L. i haven't been to my ebay yet, but i had a snipe set for this one, so i guess i didn't get it. it's a "Ted Williams" too. roland

Yes,Its a 498L in the 49er series late 70's. Craftsman Tang for Sears Roebuck and promoted under Ted Williams branding as Big Horn Skinner.Sheath is the original 498L, 49er series as well.Nice box.Schrade were tricky dickies weren't they?..they could be whatever you wanted them to be or whatever they wanted you to want! Seems like I mentioned the wrong model number, the leather handles in the knife mentioned are more like the staglon grips of the 153UH, the staglon handles of the 498L are not as prounounced as the leather counterpart model.

Larry, how do you know 498, rather than the earlier 198 ? i thought the Ted Williams marked knives were earlier than the beginning of the '49ers series.

Roland, the sheath and the "peened" guard are classic 49er features. The 49er series started in 1973 with a Schrade -Walden tangstamp. I believe the Sears version of the 148 was called the Pro-Skinner. That's JMHO though guys, I'm not too familiar with the Sears lines. I know they sometimes tended to change the Schrade products a bit to make them unique to Sears, so perhaps the sheaths were changed for this purpose? It all depends on what year this knife was made, if it's post 1973 1/2, then it's likely from the 49er line.

the ebay listing called this one a "Bighorn Skinner". does that help to determine age ? also app. what year did "Ted Williams" branded Sears/Schrade knives cease ? roland

..its got the classic and unique rippled gold 49er cross guard in one of those photos.I believe the cross guard and pommel were unique to the 49er series.I held my 498L up next to photo and could see no difference apart from Tang Stamp and etch and 49er left off sheath. That sheath pattern I believe was unique to the 49er series as well IMHO.
