I've got an extra 40 bucks, and I'd like to find a fixed blade. EDC fixed, tacticool, whatever Let me know some ideas. Thanks guys.

Moras. Set you back anywhere from $9-22 depending on the steel & grip. Will last for years & years and then some.

Mora, Becker Eskabar, Izula if you can find it that cheap, Cold Steel GI tanto.

For that price look at Cold Steel, Condor and Ontario Ranger series for a somewhat tacticool look. If plain look is ok, then of course there's Mora, Buck, and several Kershaw models.

I recently picked up a Gerber Prodigy for $42.00 shipped to the door. An ok knife that will reside in the truck. The steel seems a bit soft compared to other knives when sharpening it. Not great but ok for a beater.

You can get an Izula for about $46 shipped. That's a great little EDC/backup survival knife.

To stay truely under that limit though if it were me i would think about a bushcraft knife from Condor for about $25.

There are a few neat looking knives from Ka-Bar within your budget too.

cold steel gi tanto is 22 bucks with a kydex sheath

So whats up with that knife ? I'm not opposed to purchasing CS but is the knife a good buy ? as in , is it too thick for a good edge.. etc.. I guess for the price it would be a great choice to modify.

Oh to answer the OP's question.
Mora = yes , you cannot lose buying a Mora.
There are two newer Kershaw fixed blades that look promising and both are within your limits.
There are numerous choices from CS.

Over at Chestnut Ridge Knife Shop [they have a sub-forum here] have a few factory second Ontario blades that will fit w/in your budget. For instance, you can buy a Marine Raider [SP-10] for $34 + $7 shipping = $41. I purchased one a while back and it's flaw was the edge wasn't that sharp. I took care of it in ~15 minutes. There's also a smaller Kabar style Marine knife as well as a stainless "diving knife". If you look around, there may be other FS knives over there or in fact anywhere. If you are on a budget FS may be a good option. Many knife websites sell FS.

Someone mentioned Condor. Knifecenter has a bunch of their stuff in stock that may fit your requirements. I don't have any of their smaller blades, but I sure like the Golok. I understand some of their newer 2011 designs are quite interesting. They aren't out just quite yet.

If you're looking for something compact check out the Boker/Krein Pocket Bowie. Amazing quality for a knife selling for less than $30 bucks. (G-10 scales, 2 1/2" 440C blade, Kydex sheath)

Another vote for Becker BK11 or BK14. Think the ESEE Izula (great though it is) is beyond your stated dollar limit.

Beckerhead #42

Boker Magnum highlands ranger, 4" full tang blade, micarta scales and kydex sheath for around 23-27$
