Nice fixed blade is hard on cutting but soft on my wallet

Hey guys, I am looking for a decent fixed blade that I can get significant use out of. I'd prefer 440c or AUS 8, at the very least. I already own a SOG Pentagob Mini and have been happy with it, but I'd like to have a bigger fixed in my collection. I'd prefer to spend less than $50 bucks or so, but still want quality.

Any suggestions?

It is more of a EDC when working. I do private security so self defense is an option but it will be used for utility (cutting ropes, tape, cardboard, clothing, wire, possibly some light prying). I really don't mind how heavy it is so long as it can take a beating.

if you want a bit bigger blade try the BK14? the "eskabar"
I think I'd prefer something a bit bigger than 3.5". The BK14 is nice, but it isn't much bigger than my SOG Pentagon mini (still 3.5", just thinner). I don't want to go Rambo with a blade larger than 7", but certainly over 5".

How about an OKC Ranger Shiv at around 50 bucks? 4.5 inch blade. 1095.

Or Shank, which is bigger. 6.5 inch blade

I only paid about $50-60 for my Benchmade Rant, and it's a great knife for that price (4.5" 440C blade, grippy rubberized handle, nylon sheath with an interior plastic liner). Looks like they have gone up a bit to about the $70-75 range.

Might be worth a look. . . .

I’m new here but what about the old Kbar? I’ve had mine for almost 20 years. Done a fine job. Of course I have no idea what they cost now nor what’s happened to their manufacturing or quality control in the last 20 years…

A bit out of my price range and still a bit short. If only it were around 5.5" and still $50 haha. But definitely a nice knife.

A Kbar is my backup if I can't find a newer style fixed. I'll probably get the 1212 or D2, unless of course I find a nice newer combat/utility fixed.

I definitely like it but the 420HC makes me a bit nervous. What has been your experience with it?

It's great. I don't beat the crap out of my knives like some people do, but it handles light chopping well and holds a decent edge. It's easy to sharped too. The grip's great. The sheath's okay, but not great. I'd post pictures of mine, which has seen quite a bit of use, but I won't get home until about 10:30 and I probably won't remember to by them.

I just picked up two new BM Rants in D2 (1 DP, 1 CP) for ~ $53 each. Also, my new Becker BK2 meets your 5" blade length requirement, but was ~$58 a couple weeks ago. I can post a pic of all three if it will help. Let me know.

You desires have SOG Northwest Ranger written all over them. Either satin or Black Ti. You can get the satin for around $50.

Lots of places have the Kershaw Echo on sale for $25 right now. Hell of a knife for that money. It's only in camo now though.

Buck's use of 420HC with the Bos heat treat is a good steel, but I just don't like hollow ground blades. I can vouch for the Nighthawk as a good stout blade though. I've had the black 6" blade and the satin 5" bladed versions. If they'd put a saber grind or flat grind on that knife, I'd never look at another knife. :D Ok maybe not but I'd love a Nighthawk ground like that. Love the handles.

Another option might be a Cold Steel SRK. I think I paid about $70 new for mine, but you could probably score a gently used one in your price range. 6" blade in AUS 8 steel and an all around handy knife.

Here we go. Something like this would be great, it just needs to be a bit bigger. Do they make a bigger version?

Yep...the Shank at 6.5 inch blade. Designed by Justin Gingrich, real-deal Ranger. Built it for Rangers. "Hard use" folks, the Rangers.
