I saw an add in my morning paper for a flea market in my town today, so I cruised out to check for knives. A great abundance of the usual chinese made fantasy stuff, but did find one seller with a few old Schrades. I got a model 61OT Serpentine Stockman, has the older high carbon blades, which have all turned that nice black patina, but have no rust. The main Turkish Clip blade has about 30% blade loss from years of sharpening, but whoever did it new how to sharpen a knife, it is still clean and straight with not nicks or chips in the blade. The other 2 blades are 98% having been sharpened, but again very well. The Delrin scales are slightly pocket worn, but not chips or cracks and the nickel bolsters are perfect, and the backsprings are all strong as new ones, and have no rust on them at all.

Guy was asking $15.00, I talked him down to $12.00 and from what I've seen on Ebay lately I think I did OK?

With 30% off themain blade, I figure collector value is gone, but it's still a great user mechanically it's solid as a rock.

I can't tell you about collector value, but from a user and display standpoint you made out well! I haven't been able to get out to the flea markets and gun shows, but I think you got a pretty good deal. I can't tell you a book value on your 61OT, but I certainly would have paid that for it!

Roots (Lancaster), Green Dragon (Ephrata), Morningstar (York) and Shrewsbury Farmers Markets are a great place to find deals :D.

Ahhh. The historic homes of the Golden Age longrifles! Beautiful country too! I was through there back in the '60s. I suppose it has changed a lot since then. I like huge flea markets. We had one in Little Rock and in Pensacola also. Real flea markets, not like the one in Jackson Tennessee where Chinese and Pakastani junk, and velvet Elvis paintings abound. I miss them.

York has changed a lot since I started driving up there, only 9 years ago! I prefer to hang out around Hanover and out towards Gettysburg. My other stomping grounds, Lancaster, the first time I drove through there was about 8 years ago, it has changed a lot, they finally finished construction on Rte 222. You'll drive through neighborhoods, huge mini communities, "mcmansions", and then come across an Amish farm nestled in a community of housing developments! It's wild, but I like to travel up there. I also hang out on the eastern shore of MD, I love the water.

I am planning on going down to NC seashore, next year, and would like to know if it is worth it for me to stop at the Smokey Mtn Knifeworks museum/showroom? I don't think I would buy anything unless I found a really good deal, but I would really like to see their collections and that animal taxidermist display.

Good find on that Stockman.

Ah the good old days of the flea market, the "Lagunilla" Market in Mexico city, that was some interesting place, huge and with all kinds of stuff new and old. During the mid 70's I lived within walking distance and would visit on Sundays when the stands covered the streets, then there was this government program for building wide one way streets and one cut the market in half, they moved to nearby smaller streets, the area which was not particularly nice and safe to begin with became worse. After the big earthquake in 85 I moved to the southern part of the city and have not been there again, the place is still there, not the same as before but I've heard still worth a visit.

I've never been there, but the acquisition of the Schrade collection makes it a very tempting destination. I would check with them first to see if it is set up yet if that were a main reason for going there.

I have never been to Mexico either. The "El Mercado" (if I have that right) in San Antonio was pretty neat. I want to go back there some time in the not so distant future. Dining on the riverwalk, roaming all the shops, and of course a side trip to the Grange Hall in Gruen (Might have that one wrong too!) I saw Willy Nelson and some other groups there one fall in the eighties. A genuine chicken wire wrapped stage!(protects bands from tossed beer bottles!)

Good for you flea market find, LastConfedate. Those things can be fun. I went to one Sunday, held off till now to post, as I had to paint the metal base of this great old JackMaster display case. Nice, a lift up glass lid, wood frame, perfect old graphics. I could not get the 5 bucks out of my wallet fast enough.

As some of you may notice from my posts, I make frequent finds. Well, I work hard at it and spend much time doing it. I cannot pass by an interesting looking shop or old hardware. Garage sales: I cannot stop at every single one.. I look for evidence of 'guy' stuff as I drive by... fishing rods sticking up is one dead giveaway, or a mounted set of deer antlers is another.
