Any suggestions on where to find a nice gun cabinet, and how much to expect to spend on a "nice" one? (6-gun version is probably plenty, although 8 is an option)

Budget is maybe $500, shipped.

I've been looking at these, which look like exactly what I'm after, but I've never actually heard of them before...

Thoughts?

I'm not sure I'd want to display out in the open like that. Certainly not secure as far as thieves since they can just break the glass. And most wooden gun cabinets have pretty cheap locks that I wouldn't even trust to keep out children.

My advice? On the cheap side, spend $80 at Kmart or Walmart on an 8-gun Homak. It ain't gonna stop thieves, but your guns will be safe from kids. Of course, they won't be on display.

The better option is to put aside your $500 and save another $500-700 this year. Then buy yourself a decent safe that provides protection from thieves as well as some fire protection.

If you've just gotta have a wooden cabinet, I'm betting a custom cabinet shop can build you a nice 8-gun cabinet for a lot less than $500. If there are cabinet makers in your area, you wouldn't have to fool with shipping. Could even save a little money if you want to stain and finish it yourself. You'd get solid wood construction instead of presswood or the like.

Sorry, don't know anything about the Morton Booth cabinets. My uncles had similar cabinets at one time, but they made them themselves.

Hi,

I don't have a gun cabinet made by Morton Booth, but I do have a display cabinet made by them. The quality is nice, on the same level as the stuff you get from Sears, or J.C. Penny. Like Guyon stated the locks are pretty cheesy:barf:, their the standard bar- turned into slot type.

I'd second the custom cabinet maker idea, as the quality will probably be better, and would give you more options:).

In a display case like that, you are relying on some other means to protect the firearms from those who shouldn't get them. For a display case in your budget that will match your existing decor, go to a custom cabinet maker. You will be able to see what the quality looks like and specify exactly what you want - much like a custom knife.

If security is an issue, by a real gun safe.

I haven't seen any local cabinet makers, but I would sure think a custom cabinet would cost a LOT more than $500!

I've been looking at this one, which says it's oak, not press-board, "Sears or J.C. Penney" quality.

I don't really want to hide these guns in a safe, and I don't want to deal with hauling a 300lb gun-safe up a flight of stairs or moving it out of this apartment.

Hi,

Mine is of good quality Oak, and the fit is pretty good. The only gripe I have is with the finish. The varnish had a few gummy spots in it, and some of the millwork needed a bit more sanding, but I'm picky about such things:).

Morton Booth does a lot of contract work for major gun companies, so if you have favorite brand you might want to contact them(In recent years they've been offered by Colt, and Winchester). K-mart does offer some of their smaller cabinets once, and awhile(In the $350 range).

Have you checked antique stores etc..., you might find one in that range if you're willing to do some refinshing work.

HTH:)!!!
