I received some custom knives from Ghostown Custom Knives in hippo theme. The first is some hippos in and out of water etched on to the Crelicam Ebony scale. They also etched some sheaths with hippo footprints and a brass Zippo lighter. Finally, the star of the show is what they call "Hippo Falls." It's silver hippos inlayed with various stone and glass materials. The bolsters and blade have hippo footprints etched on them. Another masterpiece by Huck and Mandy

H Happy Hippo Jamal, you need to go back and find the November 20th, 2022 Sunday Picture Show!!! (search "Essex")
.

Interesting Hippo Facts.
Probably the most dangerous land animal killing 500 people per year.
Are herbivores, the large canine teeth are for defense and fighting
Have the largest teeth of any animal.
Males can weigh up to 3 tons.
The canine teeth can grow to more than 18"
Eat on land and poop in the water
Eat 50 to 70 lbs of grass daily, foraging mostly at night
Can not swim but can move under water up to 15mph
Can open their mouths almost 180 degrees
Unlike the rhino, they have good eyesight
Live up to 40 years in the wild
George Washington had false teeth made from hippo ivory.

What about the tusks of the African elephant?
Gee whiz Preston.... made me run to Google. I copied that list from somewhere ? back in 2022.
I guess you could be technically right. Another example that people sometimes read the junk I post.... thank you!

The hippo has an incredibly large mouth (about 2 feet across, and they can open their mouths a massive 4 feet wide!) and has the largest teeth contained inside an animal's mouth.

For a tooth to be a tusk, the researchers argued it must extend out past the mouth, keep growing throughout the animal's life and, unlike most mammals' teeth — including ours — tusks' surfaces are made of dentine rather than hard enamel. Under these parameters, elephants, walruses, warthogs and hyraxes have tusks.

Thanks for the explanation Roger, I thought the elephant's tusks were teeth, I understand the restriction of it needing to be inside the mouth.

Hippos are territorial and will defend - I can't criticize them for that. Of course, at the risk of being pedantic, the most dangerous land animal to humans is the mosquito. But it would be foolhardy to get between a bull hippo and his family. I don't really like the idea of knife handles being made out of animal parts. Elk is OK because the horns fall off. I don't know about ram, stag and water buffalo, some of my favorites. I hope to God that those animals are not being killed just for their horns. I try to stay clear of ivory, although I think I might have some. Mastodon and mammoth should be OK, although I am hearing elephant can be made to look like mammoth.
