I recently got one of these off eBay, and it is just fantastic.

Jewler's Saw

At $22 to my door the price is right too. I'm not in any way affiliated with this seller, the manufacturer or eBay - this is just a sweet little tool for a good price.

I'm not sure what actually constitutes a good jewler saw, as I've never used one yet, but SERIOUSLY need one. Hate trying to rough out a profile with hacksaw and cutting wheels and then trying to grind rest off. takes forever on my little 1x30. SO thanks for the input, gonna try one when I get paid next week.

So thanks for the tip. :)

Indeed it looks to be a good one. Those blades are really fragile, not sure how well they will work for cutting a blade profile but it prolly can be done if patient enough. :)

There is a little table that can be made to go in your vise that will help alot, maybe someone has a pic already to share of one; if not i will draw and scan one into the computer and send to whomever wants one.

OH yeah, the saws are designed to cut on the down stroke and with little pressure and takes sometime to get use to ,so buy plently of blades.

They are great for tight work on thin metal or wood. I think it would take forever to profile a blade with one. Try the spiral blades for irregular shapes. They wear out a little faster than the standard blades, but they cut omnidirectionally. Buy lots of blades cause they break really easilly. have fun with it.

when i first started making, i use my jewery saw to cut across a 1 1/2" x 3/16" piece of ats-34. it took about a hour. these are for brass ,silver, etc,

Yeah I use it mostly for connect the dots cutting in guards and for cutting mosaic pins etc. I used my crappy old X Acto a lot and when I saw a nice one I could afford jumped on it. This comes with 144 #4 blades too, which will last a while. I suggest you always use some kind of blade lube, beeswax will work but it's fun to use the proprietary stuff that sounds like it'll make majik of cutting... :D

Thanks Dave! I just bought one thanks to your link. I got it for $16.00 plus s&h. I will use it for cutting sterling for inlays. Ive seen experts cutting out the centers of silver coins for necklasses and such. This one looks like a nice high quality saw.

I just ordered one too(and saw that you got that one from the link, bruce. :) )

Yeah, I realize it won't be quick for cutting out profiles, but at least you can curve cuts(to some extent) with the jewelers saw. trying to cut out profiles with cutoff wheels and hacksaws is killing me. Esp. since I actually took to heart suggestions from all of you to form handle to fit hand more, so it "looks less like a stick" as someone said. :)

Also, once I get this in, I won't have any more excuse to ignore the brass I have sitting here, and will be time for me to try some guards/bolsters.
