Uncle Bill may remember that on the road south from Hawthorne a couple miles out of town on the highway to Mono Lake and the east gate of Yosemite National Park is the turnoff for Lucky Boy pass, with dirt roads leading the back way to the ghost towns of Aurora and Bodie. A mile or so further down the highway, some people cut a trail and built some houses about half a mile up it right nestled against the mountains.

Anyway, those people had a visitor a few weeks ago. Went into the Gun and Tackle to pick up something Friday before last and tacked up on a post was an 8 1/2" by 11" color photocopy of an about 3-3 1/2 foot long ( without tail ) 3/4 grown yearling mountain lion stretched out over a couple of branches ten feet up one of the trees by their houses. Will try to get a copy of the pix posted or mailed to you to post, uncle.

My next door neighbor got disabled and had her sister move in to help care for her. Unfortunately Sis has dogs. FIVE little, unpleasant, untrained, obnoxious and always barking all day long. Would love to take them all up to the folks down the road as each would make one nice snack if the kitty's still around.
( Note that I don't dislike dogs or cats either. My wife's allergic to their dander ).

(Obligatory knife content) One more reason to wear a belt with my 3" J frame Chiefs Special 38 and my 19" villager when I go for a walk.
I do have a five foot long walking stick with a cold steel assegai spear on one end. I would not, however, want to take on a lion of any kind with spear alone. Would definitely put to rest questions of whether you were a man were you to try it. Whether you survived or not. On second thought, forget the 38. I'll pack one of my 41 magnums even if it weighs a ton.

PS: Kalifornia banned hunting mountain lions.
Nevadans can now take 2 a year - as I understand it, without tags. May be wrong. Will drop in and see if there's a limited season or it's year around.

Puma attacks are rare, with the majority coming against children. I think that a 19" Villager would be more than enough to fend off/Decapitate a Puma. Save the .38 for predators of the two legged variety. From what I understand Pumas aren't that formidable of an opponent and any kind of spirited defence should suffice. I think a spear would make very short work of one if you let him run himself onto it!

What's scary about cougars is that they're more likely to ambush you than anything. By the time you realize it it'll have it's lips wrapped around the back of your neck! That's going to leave you in a difficult position to get a good swing! There's been cougar sightings around here and I'm afraid to let my 2 year old run around outside even if I'm with her. I took her to the zoo and the cougar on display came right up to the stroller immediately and complety ignored me and my wife. It was scary how it homed in on its prey so quickly before we even saw it coming. The guy working there was all,"He really likes children" I'm thinking "It probably thinks they taste real good". We used to camping every month but now with the baby it's been a while. Every campground around here has mountain lion warnings. I carry pepper spray and a walking stick and hope for the best.

I have been down that very road several times and have visited both Aurora and Bodie. First visit was about 40 years ago. And, I've camped in the area but never saw a mountain lion although I suspect a few may have seen me.

Not big critters but I would not want to go up against one empty handed.

If I remember correctly, back when hunters and conservationist worked together out of love for the land and it's inhabitants, some hunted cougars with packs of hounds.

When one was treed it was shot with a 22, the idea being if it took a few seconds to die, it would likely remain in the tree. If you shot it with a 357 or 45 instead, it still might take a while to die, but it would have been hit hard enough to knock out of the tree and kill or maim a few valuable hounds before succumbing.

Like I said, this is IIRC, and it's a vague memory. From back when the Men's magazines were Esquire, True, Popular Mechanics, and Field and Stream.

BTW, Uncle. Back when I first moved down to here I owned a Camaro, and took my fiance up to Aurora. The last time the road had been bladed it was really muddy, but if you put one tire on one side of the grader's tracks and the other on the other side you could make it. If you slipped into one of those ruts ( I'd swear they had to be 12 to 16 inches deep - that might be a lie, but it's how I remember it ) you'd get high centered though, and the only thing that made me chance it was a little white American Motors Concord half a mile ahead of us. Well, we made it up there, and stopped to look at the graveyard when we noticed the little American Motors sedan wasn't the Concord but the 4WD Eagle. We left before they did so if we got stuck they'd have to help get us out to get home. ( Hey, I'm not -always- as dumb as I look. )

Three or four years ago I took the road east out of Bodie in my 80 Toyota Celica and drove on into Hawthorne. A little bumpy in places but it is downhill most of the way so no real problems.
