Okay, I am looking for an afforable (around $50 but less is good) nice looking non-threating small (okay let me clarify this for some of you (I have been reading this site too long) ;) - what I am thinking is about 3" or so closed) single blade locking knife for carrying in my pocket to the office. I figure wood scales are not to practical since they probably will not wear to well. So plastic, micarta, bone, something durable. Here are some I was thinking of:

Buck 503 - I occasionally see these in plastic or other non-wood scale material. Nice but I think they are not very user friendly.

Buck 55 - I like these very much but they seem hard to find especially in something other than wood scales.

Boker Copperliner - Nice but they seem to have taken a big price jump lately and I am not sure the quality is what they once were. Not US made which is a negative prefer USA.

Case Copperlock - Nice.

Queen Small Hunter - Very nice D2 steel. Nice looking scale material. Not real easy to find. Probably have to buy on-line since I know no place locally that carries Queen. To bad to.

Puma - Puma makes/made a lot of these small locking knives but I think the new ones are pretty much junk and the old ones get pretty darn pricey.

Schrade LB3 - These are about the right size but I don't know much about the quality on these. I believe the older ones were USA but now China production (which will not happen).

Okay, so let me clarify one again before I ask for your thoughts. I need my job - so we don't want to scare the other people in the office by pulling scarey knife. Just an nice looking knife for basic office duty. :o

I sure would appreciate thoughts on these and other options.

i'd check out the locking Swiss Army knives. nothing says "i'm not going to kill you" like those red handles.

in college, i had people that were intimidated by a Buck stockman not even flinch at a SAK. weird.

A Spyderco Kiwi (Stainess steel version)
Sheeple freindly, wharncliffe blade and good in the hand.A bit small but alright for the office chores.

A Case Peanut, or an SAK alox Cadet, or just about any small SAK.
I don't think you need a lock knife for an office.

What Brother Jackknife said. Peanut or SAK.

If one of the Sheeple is still scared of it, tell them that you received it from a Nun as a gift after spending 3 years as a orphanage volunteer in Tanzania. And you thought that you had lost it while working on a ocean-going science ship while studying global warming. But you found it on the last day of your trip, and it has never left your pocket since then.

Its not an evil knife, but a reminder of your service to humanity.

The wood scales on the Bucks will wear just fine. I've had some that got to be many years old and never gave a problem. The 55 would be a good choice, as would the 503.

A G Russell also has a line of small, single blade lockbacks with Ti handles and a VG10 blade.

I carry a Case peanut at work. It's small size is comfortable for dress pants pockets.

I figure wood scales are not to practical since they probably will not wear to well.
Queen Small Hunter - Very nice D2 steel. Nice looking scale material. Not real easy to find. Probably have to buy on-line since I know no place locally that carries Queen.

Folding Hunter Liner Lock
Length: 3¾" closed

D2
In amber bone or maple

Wood wears well

I'll offer two suggestions which have not been mentioned because they are very people friendly...almost conversation pieces.

The first is a Vic Classic. About $7 anywhere. Scissors, blade, file, etc...this will do everything you need to do in an office environment. One guy used his to field dress a deer!

The second is a Spyderco Cricket. Very friendly but useful. It locks and has a small hawk bill point...great for opening boxes or putting a better hole in the coffee cup lid. Use it as a money clip.

I carry a Kershaw chive evry day in a finace office. It has even been called "Cute" by the girls. Super sharp out of the box and good looking.

I have to agree with the other posters on a small sak. It is weird, but the red handles do seem to dissarm even rabid anti-knife sheeple. In an office environment I can't see you doing anything that can't be handled by a Vitorinox classic. 8.95 at Target or the 'mart, and it can go on your keyring.

I carry two.

The one the people see is the Kershaw Silver Spur II.

Small Sak such as the money clip version. Has bit longer blade than the traditional key chain model, scissors, and nail file. Can be used as money clip.

-Spyderco ladybug - superlite.
- Kershaw Grant County
- Sog Blink

I keep a pair of children's blunt tipped classroom scissors, especially to loan to coworkers who would otherwise attempt nonknife jobs with my expensive folders. And the folders stay in my pocket especially when someone asks.

Some people have an aversion to any knife in someone else's hands. It's a projection of their worst case scenario thinking - why stoke up their paranoia?

Children's scissors are a meaningful statement to make to someone who is otherwise an adult.

I explained this to my daughter yesterday and she wheedled a nice red anodized Fred Carter linerlock out of me. Oh well.
