Hey, Kiddies, has anybody else out there used Premier Abrasives Company? I was just wondering if you'd had this same experience, and if it was an accepted norm...

Several weeks back, I had requested a catalogue from Premier. Still haven't gotten one, but I've been told they're printing a new one, and that's why. Okay. So, a rep from Premier called me (repeatedly, actually--I do admire her stick-to-it-iveness) to talk about my needs, etc. Great! Man, they made me feel like I was really top-drawer. She faxed me a quote on some 2x48 belts. I had been really relieved that they carried that size, since it had seemed like a slightly odd-size belt. She had then explained that they could make any belt length and width, within certain dimensions. Cool! Got to looking at the quote, and the prices seemed very reasonable (when compared to other manufacturers...Tru-Grit, Klingspor, etc.). Wow! Custom Belts for cheaper than normal?!? Well, I scraped together some cash and made my order (btw, my rep called me at least weekly--if not more often...it actually started to get a little bit annoying, but, hey--the price of fame, right?) At the time, I placed an order for thirty-five belts of varying grits from 36 up to 600. The rep who took the order (a different one than MY rep--she had been out of the office that day) assured me that my order should come to less than $85 (she couldn't give a total until they pulled the order and weighed it for shipping).

Well, about a week goes by, and BAM! There are my belts, right there on the doorstep! Groovy! I'm in hog heaven! I pull 'em out, and the first thing I notice on my invoice is that they've shipped extra belts...I'm confused. Is this the 'Nice-Guy' bonus? Is this the 'You're a new customer and we want to impress the Hell out of you so you'll tell everybody on BF what a great company we are' bonus? I dunno. So I call my rep back, and she explains that an order can be OVER OR UNDER your request by 20%. When they make a production run, you get what they make, evidently. Hmmm, I think. That's...okay, I guess. I mean, I got extra belts, right?

Friday, I get my invoice. $100!!! They never mentioned that they would be CHARGING me for the extra! I mean, sure, I'll pay for them (I should've known better than to ASSUME that they'd be free, of course). It just bothers me that, at no point, did ANYONE from Premier mention that a) I got to take whatever the production crew wanted to make, and b) I'd be expected to pay for it, cheerfully.

That seems like a fairly poor practice to me. Am I just wet behind the ears, here, and this is an industry S.O.P., or has this snuck up on other folks, too?

I just ordered some belts from GL Pearce Abrasives. The owner (Gary) took my order; he's a very friendly gentleman. Prices were excellent ($1.70 per belt, 2" x 72"). He gave me an exact price over the phone, including shipping, and the belts arrived soon after. They were exactly what I'd ordered, so I don't think what you encountered was anything like an "industry norm." I've also ordered from K&G, who also have very good service, but their prices on belts are quite a bit higher than Gary's.

I don't remember his phone number, but he advertises in Knives Illustrated and Blade magazines.

Over and unders are an industry norm when belts are made to order, at least in the metal polishing trade. These people work with jumbo rolls of abrasive and make up monster belts up to 60" wide then slit them to required width. The overage or unders are required to avoid scrapping leftovers, no profit in that.

Ryan,

I am probably dreaming, but do they sell Ceramic or Silicon Carbide for that price? If not, do you know of the approximate price for a 2X72? Also, can you post the phone number?

Thanks

one thing i have found in sand paper after buying the stuff for over 30 years, you get what you pay for, cheap belts are cheap belts, make sure they are using premium abrasives in your belts or they will be MORE expensive than the expensive ones.

Kaos,

GL Pearce's number is 1-800-938-0021. I have no idea what they charge for ceramic or silicon carbide; I'm pretty sure the ones I got were called aluminum oxide but I don't know what the difference between those and the other belts is.

I have to agree with Tom about cheap belts. I tried AO belts once (it was a big order). Ceramic belts last at least three times as long and they are not even twice the price of AO.
If Pierce has Ceramic or SC, I would be interested in their prices though.

Tom,
Regarding which belts to use with titanium, you might want to check out Mission's website (www.missionknives.com). In their "Articles" section there is an offering titled "Knifemaking with Ti". Table 3 details the life expectancy of several different types of belt. I believe this data refers to results obtained by working with beta titanium, but wouldn't the life expectancy of the various belts only improve when grinding 6AI-4V? You may already be aware of this, but just in case...
