Not being able to afford the Maxpedition Fatboy pack, I looked for one that was cheap and fit my needs for fieldwork and some geocaching/hiking. I found this Columbia West Wood travel pouch for $9.95 at Campmor. I was hesitant, since it was _Columbia_ and so cheap, but it is a very nice bag for carring knives/lights/etc. and some notebooks. It is made of ripstop nylon, and has an inner divider for pens and knives, and I added some paracord pulls on the zippers to quiet them. Seems very well made, and definetely worth the $10. It is bigger than it looks on the website...It holds alot.
Just a FYI!

Thanks for the tip.

Can you describe the inside a bit more? Is the main compartment divided, or have any pockets, or all one section? Is there any padding? I actually prefer without padding, since that take up some of the volume. It seems a little long and skinny, at 10.5" x 5", but it would hold a field guide or two in there.

Interesting find.

Yeah, I found it will hold a Audubon field guide. The main interior is padded, but the interior can expand pretty good to about 2.5". The main pocket is not divided, but the outside one just has some mesh pen and misc. dividers. There is also a security pocket that runs vertically on the backside of the pack, and a small pocket on the flap (holds ARC AAA or up to a 3" knife).
Hope that gives more of an idea...

I got something like that at Walmart for $6.97, I think. It was cheap enough that I bought two of them. It's make by "East Sport." I can assume only that the name is designed to trade off brand-confusion, via "Eastpak" and "Jansport," two of the bigger names that make nylon packs.

I had a smiliar issue a few months ago and went with one of these.

Very simple. Built tough. And best of all, doesn't look like a purse. The $10 price tag didn't hurt either.
