As some of you have probably already seen, over at our favorite auction site a questionable large Regular with unique graphics is for sale. Of course I had to pose the obvious question to the seller, to which he responded after two days. Then I see that a few others have posted similar questions. ala....

Q: How long is the knife when fully opened ?
A: 8 1/4 in
Nov 29, 2012
Q: On the desciption you say that the blade is stone wash but on the picture with the box it says the blade is "Jerry Rados Damc. LB" Have you had the blade change? Thanks,
A: yes the blade was switched out with a Chris reeves stonewashed blade!

Q: Something is off here. That is not a Rados Damascus blade. Either the birth card shown does not go with this knife or the blade has been swapped. Any idea which?
A: yes they were switched out, this is a stonewashed Chris reeves blade!

Q: Hi, What is the blade steel on this Sebenza? Is the blade original? I ask, because the birthcard claims the blade is ladder damascus...and it isnt. Thanks!
A: the blade is S35VN stonewashed Chris reeves blade, not Damascus!

Q: Why does the tag say Damascus blade When your blade is stonewashed Thx
A: the Damascus blade was removed and replaced with the Chris reeves stonewashed blade!

I can only believe that our little community here is doing a nice job of policing the aftermarket for these fine knives, and that our nuttiness about the quality of CR products has educational value in the consumer market - not the least of which is spotting fraud. I've been around the block a little in the CRK collecting world and I'm still learning.

So - well done to all who have contributed and are monitoring sales like this out there in the netherworld.

My question to the seller was:

Q: Was the current blade fitted by the CRK shop, or swapped out by you or another owner?
A: no i changed it out

The seller didn't allow that question/answer to be published . . .

The answer to my initial question was a flat-out lie, but I think that the preponderance of similar questions forced the seller to come clean. Here's my exchange -

Q: The birthcard for this knife says "Jerry Rados B&W Ladder Damascus" but the blade appears to be regular steel. Is that the original blade?
A: this is original Chris reeves stone washed blade, not Damascus!

It's not a lie if you think of it as an original blade rather than the original blade.

Well, those are some mighty powerful articles that got left out of the response. If not a lie, then it's at least evasive. Either way it told me all I needed to know.

On the flip side there is a sweet little grail Sebenza listed there cheap that has been overlooked so far. Especially for lefties. I'll send the Item # out via PM or Email if anyone's interested.

Thanks for the info Sir!

It's still a nice knife, but I'll limit my bid to what I'd pay for one with no docs at all. I wish it did have the original blade on it!

Sent you a PM for that a little while ago, but there's a chance I already found what you're referring to...... ;)

The concern that I always have with a FrankenSeb is all the things that can get screwed up when Sebenza (or Mnandi) blades are swapped -- too shallow of a lock up (I've seen some back at 30% engagement that wouldn't hold under pressure), 100% lock up, mis-matched washers and/or bushings (leading to either a tight blade, or incurable blade play). For me, no amount of discount can compensate for the loss of precision that makes a Sebenza a Sebenza . . .

I guess I've just been lucky, I've made swpas with no loss of precise fit. I've even swapped the blade from a 21 into a regular and vise versa. I'd never sell it that way, but I do carry it. Another thing I've considered if I can get that UG cheap enough is to get it and send it to the mothership for a whole new blade. If the bidding doesn't go much hugher, I'd have a nice looking knife for a fair price.

BTW, Dallas, thank you for the heads-up about the BG-42 small. That was me that got it. :cool

Darn your the one who took it from me lol.. I was bidding little by little but never hit the reserve ..haha

Screw the reserve, the BIN was cheap enough on that one. I wasn't going to risk letting that one get away! :D :D

I'm a knife lover on a budget, especially around Xmas...every penny counts lol Can't wait to get some pics! You gonna get it Blasted to make it look like new?

I hear you about that, for sure. Pics will definitely be forthcoming. As for getting it blasted, it depends on whether or not I decide to carry it. If I do, I'll leave the character marks alone, and add to them. If I don't end up carrying it, I'll consider a trip to the spa for it.
