Decided to re-hang an axe I bought recently. The haft is very dry. So dry in fact the wedge has fallen out.
There is quite a bit of damage to the haft due to over-chopping. Apart from that it's very sound. There was no effort required to remove the haft, it just slipped out really. I was just about to throw it aside when I noticed writing on the part which was inside the eye. The person who hung her last has written his initials there.

I reckon that is really neat. I just wish he had put his full name and a date. Out of respect for this unknown person I am going to put that same haft back in and wedge it the best I can. With a bit of oil she'll last for many more years.

Imagine someone removing a haft from a tool in decades from now and finding your name on it.

regards...Frank

I like the way you think my friend. Those initials are the real link to history and bring the axe Life.

Best regards

I've often said "if only this or that object could speak". You have one that did! It just can not tell us as much as we would like to know. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the story. I think I'll start putting my initials and the date on my rehandles. Grandkids, etc, might someday get a kick out of it. In today's litigious (had to spell check that) society, I think I'll skip the full name.

Nice thought, Frank :) ... Maybe I gonna add any of my initials to my selfmade-hafts on some tools I use not so often. But sometimes they break during work... typical for heavy duty lumber work.

Kind regards
