Is that a 171UH.Great job I don't polish my knives but if I thought I could get them to look like that I might start.Arnold

No not a 171, its old old Schrade bowie. I never used to like this style when I first saw them but they have really grown on me. This one is the rarer type smooth higher gloss blade Schrade bowie so it was easier to polish (not a semi gloss blade like most plain Schrade bowies).
The are a thick blade (wide) like a 171 and I think the reason for the extra width is that Schrade used them as a bare canvas to have decorative work done on them and the narrower blades found on most knives dont really suit this type of work.
I purchased this one just to polish and also because I thought it was a prototype as it has 000 stamped on it, but I dont think is now that I have it here.
Regards Tim

Mother mag polish? So far best stuff I have used, mirror polish to literally mirror glossy.

I would love it if mag polish did the trick, no this is the way to do it for those who are interested, its pretty laboursome. Only difference is now I used 8000 & 12000 grit also just to finish off. As in link

Here is a photo of the stamped numbers on the same knife before and after I fiddled with them, Ive got to say Ive never seen anything like it??

Nice work Tim.
Great thread you posted on the process also.

Question; Where do you get your Micro-mesh. I am not familiar with it nor where it is available.

I can readily find sandpaper up to 2000 grit, after that I use Micron paper in 4000, 6000, & 8000 grit. I haven't been able to find the in between grits, & like yourself will use a worn piece to try and achieve a finer finish.

Checking on line I find some is available in 2X2" & 6X6" sizes, but were recommended for repairing china. Is this what you use?

Thanks,
Dale

Here is one I purchased from here in Australia last time, he has a few kits. Read his listing as it is informative, re comparitive grades Remmeber the grades between paper and cloth back dont necessarily compair. Try and use as much as you can of 1500 and 2000 paper backed first it will get clogged fairly quickly so cut lots of small peices. And then you will only need a little of this more expensive cloth backed product to finish, remmember its re-usable so I cut in two inch square sizes so I can rinse while rubbing it under tap to help unclog any particles.

You can find the micro mesh sanding kit, foam sanding block at www.woodnwhimsies.com. The company name is Wood N Whimsies in Jacksonville, FL. I hope it was okay to give this info here.

I purchased the above knife off USA ebay recently and got stung, I would never have purchased it had I known that the numbers were stamped on it incorrectly.

To me it looks a though someone may have done it on a lunch break at Schrade.
Be warned there may be many others coming onto ebay like this shortly.

This one is a reject and and would not have passed Schrades quality control it have been thrown into the reject bin.

Dont get sucked in like I did.
