I plan to get a good buddy (who is my kids' godfather) a knife for Christmas. I'd like a folder with nice wood scales for under $150. Any thoughts?

I think a buck vantage avid would fit the picture quite nice and its a lot cheaper than $150, however there are some offerings from mcusta that seem very nice(dont own one) and their knives are spoken pretty highly of through the forums.

Some specifics like size, steel preference, or type of knife that you think he'd like would be helpful. The first that come to mind would be something in Snakewood, Mexican Bocote, or Ebony from GEC. Queen also makes some knives with Zebrawood scales.

I would suggest going the traditional route. A nice Case or GEC in stag is always a great gift.

A little more info: 3-4 inch blade, one handed opener, cocobolo, ironwood, snakewood or other such wood.

Many Bucks, the Tony Bose/Case Ebony Back Pocket, or as dannyp says, any number of GEC, Canal Street, Schatt & Morgan (Queen) patterns. They all make a wide variety of beautiful knives with wood handles.

AG Russell offers a wide range of up-scale knives from all of these and other makers. $75 should get you an excellent wood handled knife. The good choices are endless.

Merry Christmas and good luck!

A GEC #72 lockback in ebony and 1095 with an excellent heat treatment will only set you back around $85. Nice fit and finish, versatile Wharncliffe blade profile, timeless looks and it feels great in the hand.

I'll throw out a suggestion for Lone Wolf knives, specifically their Longhorn series. Wood handles, liner locks, S30V blade steel, 3.5" blade length.

Sounds right up your alley. It's a more modern folder than what a lot are suggesting, but it has a good mix of high tech and natural materials.

The lone wolf Blackfoot is a great and very ergonomic knife. It is available with Cocobollo scales. I'm very happy with mine

Mcusta makes quite a few knives with cocobolo handles. I bought Take few month ago and very impressed. Great workmanship. Very good steel. Most of the a little under 3" blade, but "Basic" and 'Tactility" has blades 3.25-3.5"

This knives available at many US dealers with better prices than japanesedirect, but japanisedirect has the biggest selection.

My around-the-house EDC is the Benchmade 440 Opportunist.
The biggest selling point for me on this knife was it's weight. At 1.7 oz (on par with a CRK Mnandi) you'll almost certainly forget you have it with you when it's not needed, but it'll always be there when it is.

BF user Hugh posted some great pictures of it back in '08. Check them out HERE.

I would also recommend looking at Lone Wolf. I like the Harsey T series much better than the current offerings. Although they have been discontinued for a while, you can probably still find a T-1 in cocobolo.

+1 on the BM 440. I have mine with me today.

Other possibilities:

- Al Mar Falcon Talon
- MCusta (various models)
- Maserin ARNO
- Benchmade Shoki
- AG Russell Spire
- Fallkniven P with cocobolo

Thats about all I can come up with right now. Happy hunting!

I can second the Mcusta Take. I have one in Staminawood, and it is a very nice knife.
If you want a larger blade, take a look at the Fallkiven P in cocobolo.
