I have been a fan of NWA knives for a while and I finally ordered one but I'm wondering if I chose the right steel. O-1 and A2 were offered and I chose O-1 for perhaps the wrong reason: I love the look of the differential heat treatment. However, I want a knife that is tough, not brittle, and holds an edge well (I use the Spyderco Sharpmaker). Did I chose un-wisely?

A.

I wouldn't second guess yourself.
You've been a fan for a while, so know his knives and seem knowledgeable and under these conditions
first choices are most always the correct ones.

Thank you, but perhaps I should re-phrase the question. Will O-1 take and hold an edge superbly and I can I beat the hell out of the knife without fear of breaking, etc?

In that case my advice would be to use the knife for a knife's intended purpose but not to beat the hell out of it no matter the blade steel.

My knives from Nick have all been O-1 steel and they take and hold an edge just fine. The are tough and not brittle at all. If you don't mind staining of the blade, O-1 is great. The patina that develops from normal use gives the knife character.

Why does everyone want to beat the hell out of a good knife?? Knives are made to cut things . Maybe you should look at a axe.

I once asked Paul Bos what steel he used in a hunting knife. He said O1 and that he appreciated how well it took and held an edge.

I agree! It always scares me when someone asks "Will it hold up if I beat the hell out of it?". What's that supposed to mean?
