Greetings all,
One of my recent scores at the Arkansas show was a neat little Nick Wheeler hunter that was donated by some generous soul as an auction knife. While Paul worked up a sheath for me, I attempted to get some info on it from Nick. The knife seemed very familiar to me, yet I couldn't find a single pic of it in my otherwise pretty comprehensive Wheeler photo archive.
Nick was able to provide not only some neat info on the knife, but also some stored pics of the knife in the making.
The blade was inspired by an old Marbles hunter that belonged to Nick's grandfather. Nick reproduced the blade profile and dimensions quite faithfully, but put a nicely sculpted handle on it of his own design.
The pics more or less speak for themselves, which is just as well, since Nick's e-mail was a casualty of a recent computer crash. BTW if anyone has been trying unsuccessfully to reach me by e-mail, please use: pinnocr@hotmail.com
Now to the knife:
The original:
The famous Wheeler anvil:
Forged to shape:
Initial grinding:
Hmmm, choices, choices...
Now to why the knife seemed familiar to me: it turns out this was one of Nick's JS test knives.
Roger
