Nicked my Razor Sharp Edgmaking System's slotted wheel - about 1/4" - repair?

I was trying to follow the vague instructions about sharpening a chisel and managed to gouge out a long thin strip of the wheel, plus put a gash in it about 1/4 inch deep - about the size of a dime. Can I grind the wheel down to below the damaged portion, or should I just replace the wheel. They are pretty pricey - $36.50 plus tax on Amazon, just for one replacement wheel.

You can grind them down with no ill effects. Just re cut the slots with a good sharp hack saw and you are good to go. I use 80 grit sandpaper on mine when I need to re-grit, and it works fine.

I tried filing it, but it was too slow. Then I broke out the angle grinder, which works, but I have more to go. However, I have delaminated some of the paper from the wheel's sides - I'll have to re-glue it.

You want to use some 60-80 grit sandpaper tacked or glued to a flat board and sand it down to a flat edge. If you have some d-laminating, I would be leery of using them. You may have to replace it unless you can sand it down that far. Turn the buffer on and hold the board with the sandpaper flat against the rotating wheel to sand it down, using the table or bench top as a guide to get an even flat grind.

Blessings,

Omar
