Nickel & American Oak?

I'm getting closer to pulling the trigger on a custom shop 110 and am currently smitten by the nickel and American oak combination. But it's difficult to judge from the animation on the custom shop site.

Anybody have any pictures of a 110 (or 501) with this combination that they would be willing to share?

Thoughts and impressions of how it looks in hand?

Thanks!

I do not have one but the photos I have seen show a very beautiful knife.

The only knife in the picture without NS bolsters. Go figure, right? Well, it's something for comparison. I do like brass with oak, they seem to compliment each other. I would love NS too I'm sure.

The wood on mine doesn't match perfectly. But, it's unique and I've grown fond of it regardless.

I just got a 110 from the custom shop with that configuration. I'll try to get you a picture when I get a chance, camera on my phone is broke (don't judge :o) It's a really nice combo. I got the brown leather sheath with mine and the nickel got a little discolored, so when I carry it I use an older black leather sheath. The oak itself looks really nice, but I figured out I like darker wood better after spending all that loot....

Got a drop-point 110 in oak and brass, but not nickel. I'll post a photo tomorrow.

Edit: It's now tomorrow, so —

The custom job is the second from the top. Brass and oak, with a 500 at the bottom to show nickel bolsters.

Wow RBB, it looks nicer in brass than I would have guessed. Actual pictures are so much better than those graphics.

What are your thoughts of the brass and oak in hand? I like the classic brass/ebony (or Dymondwood or walnut) better than rhe nickel and birch/cherry wood/Micarta of the 500 as the latter is too "blingie" for me dour Methodist aesthetic. I like the 500 as my fancy dress knife.

I want to get a drop point 110 for EDC and want something different. Very smitten with the oak and am now going back and forth on bolster color.

Thanks again on posting the pictures.

....And the brass bolsters have the usual handling tarnish, too!

To complete the IDs in the picture, the top knife is a 50th anniversary 110 with standard Dymondwood, and the bottom 110 is a two-dot with a relatively pale ebony.

When I ordered this, I waffled a lot on the bolsters and scales. Micarta was ruled out at the start because for scales in general I just prefer wood, bone (not stag), or delrin. Dymondwood is generally OK. (I agree with you on the garish cherry color on the 500.) What I really wanted was walnut, which would have been the best matchup with brass, but oak was acceptible. [Edit: on checking, I see that walnut is offered — and I can't explain why I didn't choose it.]

I also ran the alternatives on nickel, but couldn't find an agreeable combination. Besides, I have the 500 (and a 501, 503, 505), and that does me for nickel.

In the end, I opted for a warm color in the bolsters and a moderately warm color in the scales, because the end goal was getting a classic 110 (brass, warm wood) but with a drop-point blade.

pinnah,

Here's a good thread that shows several combinations of custom 110s including a nickel and oak FG model. Link

JDBear, thanks for posting this.

How has this combination held up for you? Any thoughts on it vs brass bolsters?

I think the n/s is a little more low maintenance than the brass. Or at least it will be because it won't tarnish. I've never polished any of my 110's or 112's that have brass, so it won't be an issue for me. I said earlier in the post that the brown sheath discolored the bolsters a little, but after switching to the black leather it's pretty much gone away. I think the brass has a warmer look to it and I think I may like it more, but I don't miss the rainbow hue they always take on.

Pinnah, I can tell by many of your posts that you have a great appreciation for natural beauty in your knives. So I can tell you this, I think you will LOVE the oak. There are so many different shades in the wood and it has beautiful contrast with the n/s. It really looks fantastic. Very rugged and refined at the same time...
