Nickel plated?

I'm thinking of getting a 112 and adding my own finger grooves. I have multiple 112's and a 112 FG model and have modified a 110 FG and 110 LT to my liking. However, I was wondering if I could do that to a Nickel Silver bolstered version? Is it plated or is that the material through and through?

Think of Nickel Silver as brass made to "look" like silver thru the addition of nickel. Contains no elemental silver.
Historical name is German Silver.

edit.. as I understand it, the metal was used China centuries ago and it's composition was a secret. The Germans figured it out. In modern times trade secrets now run in the opposite direction... ;o)

I’m glad you asked the question. I just assumed they were nickel plated and not solid through nickel. I have steered away from nickel bolsters since I had a cheap knife with nickel plating that started peeling off and rusting underneath the plating. Now I’ll have to get some Bucks with nickel bolsters.
