How were these knives typically carried since the sheath has no loop / slots, etc?
Just held by friction fit thru a belt?

edison,
What exactly are you referring to here? What Knives? What Sheathes?

No!
A nicker isn`t a neck knife! :)
It`s a traditional german hunting knife and was intended for killing roe and deer by piercing through the spinal marrow in the neck. That`s why it`s got it`s slim shape.
Nowadays it`s also part of the traditional bavarian costume.

The sheath you mention holds the knife by friction and is carried in the pants knife pocket. :D

Wolfgang,
If possible, perhaps you could post a picture?. I am always interested in other country's history and traditions.

My wife took my digi cam to Italy, that`s why I`ve to post some pics of production knives and sheaths. :)

That`s a full tang Nicker with saw, cork screw and special blade (where I miss the english term, sorry  ) another kind of (detachable sheath) pocket sheath.
