nickle silver spacer

did some searching and couldnt find an answer, so if someone knows a link to answer, id be happy with that. what i want to do is put two different materials for scales on a full tank knife with a nickle silver spacer between them. the scales will be pinned on of course, but what is the best way to put say a 1/16 n/s spacer inbetween? would epoxy hold it in place?

I would make the 3 spacers and drill a couple of holes to set pins in to keep them lined up when shaping. Then I would just peen them together and smmoth the sides out, then set the handle scales to them and the tang with pins and epoxy,no need to epoxy the 3 spacers together unless you want a small glue line visiable between them.

Just my opinion,
Bruce

maybe i didnt explain it well enough. on the tang, i am putting one tye of scale, then perpendicular to the tang, a 1/16 thick nickle silver spacer, then the other scale. only one thin spacer, two different scale materials. i dont want the scales stacked on the tang. they are both end to end on the tang with the perpendicular n/s spacer between them for contrast.

I think I understand what your saying and maybe I can help. Epoxy alone may hold your n/s spacer in place but when using bone, ivory and unstablized woods which have a tendency to move around you want to make sure it's anchord in place. What I have done is this.In the center of your n/s spacer and as close to the bottom as possible drill a 1/16" hole. Then cut a pin to fit the hole so that about 1/16" extends on either side of your spacer. This is your anchor pin. Then notch the bottoms of each end of your handle so that it just fits over the anchor pin. Then all you need to do is epoxy and pin handle material in place........hope this helps.........John

After reading your post again I was reading it wrong. If you plan on pinning the handle scales or screwing them on the tang then I would just epoxy the 3 pieces together to hold them in place while drilling and shaping.the only problem I can see coming from this is when you shape the handle you may end up with some glue showing as a layer in the stack.you can get around this by using colored epoxy or just screwing the three pieces together from the back side and smotthing off the screw heads, then grind and shape the handle after securing it to the tang and pining it together.

just some more of my thoughts.

john, thanks, i was thinking something like that, but wasnt sure if it was the best way.
bruce, i think youre still not understanding what i am doing, if i am understanding what you are saying. i guess i cant add pics on here, so lemme do it this way. the scales will be flat on the tang, end to end separated by a thing n/s spacer like this ====:======= with the colon being the upright spacer and the equal symbols being the two spacers.all of that will lay flat on the full tang. i appreciate all the ideas tho.

Ok Got it now...:D

I agree with John on this one,Pins through the spacer and into the handle scales.I have also done this myself only on a framed handle,The spacer was thicker and I soldered it to the frame after putting blind pins through the frame and into both spacers.Basically like putting a front or rear bolster on the frame only in the middle.Sorry I was thinking differently, but we got it now:cool:
