On that infamous night, perhaps the most historically significant use of knives, which knife/knives were most prevalent? The Mercator K55K? The standard Mauser bayonet? BYOK?

It was a term of art, while I think one person might have been hacked to death with a hatchet or pickaxe, the majority were executed with pistols. Hitler turned on those conservatives that he considered unreliable, and killed off most of the SA because he couldn't control them. It was a consolidation of power, and though in popular parlence is called "Night of the Long Knives" in the historical context I more often here it called Operation Hummingbird.

The term Night of the Long Knives goes back centuries, and (I think) has it's origins in English history. (Mercenaries snuck 'long knives' into a political meeting and killed some rival leaders, or something like that.)

The Night of the Long Knives, as it refers to Nazi history, didn't involve knives; Hitler's goons used guns.
