Night Vision for Noobs

So I am considering night vision for my preps, and it looks like there are two types of products out there:

-30 dollar toys
-400 dollar + for gen II and above

I am wondering if anybody who is more familiar with this kind of stuff can recommend something in the 100 ballpark? I am looking for the NCstar or the sanrenmu type of product, if you will.

Of course I realize that anything I hope to depend on, I gotta be willing to shell out a good bit of dough for, but what I am looking for is something not too expensive for me to play around with and see if I am A) willing to invest a lot of money in and B) what features I like/dislike

any thoughts would be appreciated

I use to sell at the flemarket. A supplier had some binoculars that said night vision. All you could see was that is was night. If you want the real deal it is going to cost you big time.

Of course, and that is true for everything. I was just wondering if there was a decent trial one I could buy and play with before dropping a few hundred bucks.

Looks like that is a no.

I think you'll need to spend more than $400 for Gen II if you want them to really work & last. I would recommend Gen III anyway.

I've never done this myself, but there are places that will rent NVDs. No idea terms of cost, but that may give you a chance to try NVDs out.

CWL, what kind of places are you talking about, like gun shops or electronics stores or something?

when I was selling at the flemarket I looked all ove the place for some cheap ones that do not cost $400.00+ I could not find them. I wish you the best of luck.

There are some surveillance rental places around, there might be one where you are. The other thing you need to think about is if you want to have active or passive NVGs the passive ones are the military style, where as the active ones use a IR light to give better quality and coverage for cheaper. Thats all I know about NVG, never used it myself, beyond nite-shot on a camcorder, and that was...... not so great.

If you have a optics or higher-end sporting goods store near where, try there and ask if they have a rental "trial" unit.

Most people aren't willing to spend $1K+ on something they've never tried, so I know that there are places that rent. No personal experience though.

I have been looking at night owl actually.

I'll take a look around and see what I find in terms of sporting good stores, thanks for all the advice guys.

I'm not familiar with any good low end brand, but do yourself a favor and when you get a pair go out to a field or wide open space away from ambient light sources, and look up at the night sky, you will be in awe.
