...yes...a topic far removed from Busse blades BUT there is an undeniable depth of knowledge in this forum on all manner of subjects so I figured I would ask here.

I am looking at putting new glass on my SSG my first choice is Leupold MkIV (probably the 6.5-20 x 50) but i am also interested if anyone has any experience/thoughts on the Nightforce 5.5-22x50 NXS ??? I can get one here at the moment for somewhat less than the Leupold but have ZERO personal experience with them.

Andy:D

Both are excellent glass and I really don't think you would be disappointed with either.

Nightforce is generally a step up from Leupold, even the MkIV (I also like and own some Leupolds). Since the ATACR came out the older NSXs can often be found for a good price, so if you can, go for the Nightforce. Make sure the reticle and turrets use the same units (both mils or both moa) some nightforce scopes have moa reticles and mil turrets which is just silly.

Only shot one nightforce. Really nice glass. I am a big Leupold fan and I love the Mark IV. Problem is the NF that I used was a lower power so I cant really make a fair comparison between that and my Leupolds.

Like stated above both are great and not really a wrong answer. Good luck with you choice bro.

Thanks guys... that is what I was hoping to hear as I can get a pretty good deal on the Nightforce just now, of course it is only a good deal if the glass is OK.. :D :D

You won't be disappointed in the glass, or the overall quality of the scope. If it has the reticle and adjustments that you want, GO FOR IT!!

If you can get one less than a leupold mk 4 get it. I have one like you mentioned with the moar reticle and zeri stop. It is Incredible clear glass. Got a mk 4 at the same time with m3 knobs. The mk 4 is less weight and I put it on a 700 pss scout rifle and the nf on a full length pss. Both fill their role well.

I've never shot a nightforce but own a couple Leopold 6.5x20x50's. They are very good glass.

Another option for you is the Zeiss 6.5x20x50. I also own one of these. Price is about $800.

Without doubt the Zeiss is far, far better than the Leopolds. I've hunted with both of them and this is not my opinion it is a fact. The Zeiss will give you an extra 5-10 minutes of shooting time at dusk and dawn which is generally when the critters really move.

A dealer I spoke to carries all brands of high end scopes. I asked him if there was a better scope than Zeiss for hunting and it was his opinion that Zeiss was the best scope for that application. In a military application I would opt for a Nightforce, Schmidt Bender or the like. They are great scopes... no doubt.

For the money, I don't think Zeiss can be beat. Check them out...

I dont know didly about scopes.....actually in all my years of shooting I've always shot factory iron sights. BUT a few of my friends who hunt swear by the Zeiss scopes for the very same reason Tom gave. Several extra minutes of trigger time in low light.

I just got a scope actually the other day, Simmons 3x9 on an Old Marlin Bolt Action .22 I picked up.......................... I guess you have to start somewhere:D

Sadly I am probably have to cash in a NMFFSH to get the optics....well it is winter here just now and the dog house is just not warm enough.... :(

If you can get the nightforce cheaper, I also vote to go for it. Both will do the job, I have used MKIV, Vari-X 3, nxs, US optics, etc. Nightforce has good glass and good eye relief. I would also throw in Premier if you are still shopping around.

I am a big fan of NF. My POF has one on it and it's fantastic. I honestly can't tell any difference in the quality of glass between my NSX and my Zeiss, but i can say that the NSX at 22x is just as clear as the Zeiss at 10x

On the other hand, i don't like Leupold all that much. They make great glass, but Zeiss has better clarity and costs less.
