When was the first year if production? What steel would this be?
Found the knife in the 1994 catalog, appears 94 was first year offered in the catalog.
This came in the mail today off the bay. 1994

If Joe doesn't know for sure.......NOBODY knows for sure.

I like the boatload theory, though.

:D

It's 425 steel according to the catalog in 1994.

I had one, same year, lost it in the woods. Still mad.

I asked joe bout the steels this last week and he told me this--

440c started when we incorporated in late 1961.

We switched to 425mod in 1981…not sure if that was across the board/all at the same time or what.

We switched to 420hc in 1992.

But then, just to show us that, as with all things Buck......these dates above must be taken with a grain of salt.

:D

""""'''''''''''''''''''''''''''""The 650 came out about 2 years after we changed from 425mod to 420hc. So why does the catalog say it was made of 425mod in 94 and 95? In the 96 catalog it doesnt mention the steel type and we can surmise that in 96 they were made of 420hc. I might be able to find someone here that remembers the project and can shed some light. In the meantime, my theory is that when we pitched the idea of the 650, the steel type made sense for the military's aplication. Even though they did not pick the 650, when we went to production of it we decided that we would keep the same steel type since it made sense for the military and it could be a marketing point that the knife met a majority of their requirements. After a couple of years we switched.
Another possibility is that we had a boat load of 425mod in the proper thickness and decided to use it all up on the 650.
Either is possible and they may both be true.
I hope this helps.

Looks like it fits, at least.......and that's the important thing.

Everybody seems to be getting ready for the crapocalypse with all these military knives.......did I miss a memo?

It's an interesting sheath for sure! I've never seen one with that kind of easy on/off belt apparatus. But, to answer his question, no it's not proper (if that means original). Otherwise it looks fine.

I think I read the TOPS model of this knife is be discontinued for 2018. Not sure if that is correct. If it is, it generates it's own interest obviously.
