Nighthawk vs. Ionfusion Special

Looking for a tough fixed blade and have heard nothing but good comments about the Nighthawk, but nothing about the Ionfusion special. Price is not matter, I want your opinions. What is better? I will beat the crap out of if because I only trust fixed blades when doing heavy work. Is the Ionfusion brittle? Or is the interior 420 and the outside fused together with the titanium stuff? What could take the beating, be comfy in the hand, and last to talk about it?

The nighthawk is an excellent blade. I have been quite impressed with it. Smokey Mountain Knife Works currently has the ionfusion special for $34.99 and the nighthawk for $29.99. As for comfy in the hand, the nighthawk would be hard to beat.

I know, they are cheap at SMKW. They are almost the same price, but The ionfusion sells for like 80 bucks at other places and has that cool steel...

I don't think that you can compare "tough" between the 119 Special IonFusion and the NightHawk.

The Nighthawk is a very tough survival type knife that is not built to do the same job that the other is built to do.

The toughness of the Ionfusion knives has been chronicled in many earlier posts on this forum going back a year or more but in terms of edge-holding under field condition game dressing use on game up to and including elk (actually multiple elk over a season without having to resharpen in one case).

They are both tough in different ways.

This is obviosly just my opinion and there are many more experienced and knowledgeable forum members with many years of practical outdoor and hunting experience that I am sure will give you a more practical, experience based opinion.

If you're going to beat it up, get the Nighthawk. It is one tough knife and, with E2K, tough to beat as a cutting tool.

The Ionfusion special is sharper and will hold it's edge longer (much longer) under normal conditions but, if the metal supporting the edge is damaged the ionfusion coating won't be much help.

The edge is a chisel grind and, while it will cut for a long time if used for cutting meat and skinning and butchering animals, I just don't think that it would stand up to serious chopping or any activity that might put dings or chips in the base metal of the edge.

The Nighthawk, OTOH, will stand up to almost anything. As I said, it's one tough knife and if SMKW is selling them below wholesale, that's the way I would go.

What the heck, get one of each. You can get them both for less than what I'm selling the Ionfusion 119 for.

There's an idea. Get 'em both and tell us what you think. As for me, I have a tanto nighthawk that is so thick, that delicate cutting isn't its strong point. However, you could pry the hatch off a tank with this thing.

I also have an ionfusion blade that I am looking forward to trying out next week. I'll post what I think then.
