to C.J. Buck- I really like the knife, but how could you make such a good knife with such a lame sheath? It's one small step better than carrying the (excellent)knife around in your mouth.

Good question. What would you recommend in a sheath for the nighthawk?

For myself, I would prefer a kydex sheath with a multi-carry option. I would really be turned on by a j-clip of steel with a swivel attached so one could adjust the angle on the belt. It should be ambidextrous and should allow for wearing the knife edge up as well as edge down. I like black but consider a quality knife of this type with a handle and sheath in a color that would blend in with the off-white color of a t-shirt while being worn.It would be easier to conceal under light colored clothing, which is so common in the summer here in the south.
I would also like to buy a few Nighthawks in other steels such as D-2, VG-10, or BG-42. I like the Buck 110, but mine is a master series with a BG-42 blade. I realize that these additions would increase the cost. I think the changes I mentioned would make the Nighthawk a real contender in the tactical fixed blade market. With a retail price of somewhere around $125, it would be able to compete with alot of custom knives for twice the price. I think that the carry system is very important. The gun market proves to me that ease of carry/ comfort of carry sells more guns than just about anything because if it isn't comfortable to carry, people won't carry it.
Thank you for responding and for your consideration.

Fudo,

CJ is off till later this week, maybe Friday. He had to go to a meeting of the AKTI in Vegas. Someones gotta make sure "they" don't take away our knives!

Take care,

I have a 1st generation model not very sharp how do I go about getting this knife sharp.

Mr. Houser-Thanks for the response. feel free to address my question and response above.

Takao, send it back to Buck and ask them to put Edge 2000(tm) on it. It's worth it. Call them at 1-800-735-2825 for instructions and cost.

Fudo,

thanks for the well thought out response. I have sent the thread to our engineering department. I will pass on any feed back.

You mentioned the aspect of concealment. What legal ramifications are there for concealing a knife if this size?

I agree with your other assessment that the Nighthawk would be pretty incredible in BG-42.

Thank you for your response. The design of the Nighthawk is excellent. It is handicapped by the very ordinary steel that it is constructed from. 420j2 if I am correct. The handle is very well designed and executed. I have large hands so for myself, I would like to see the handle 1/2" longer. If you get kydex sheaths get them done by Blade-tech. They make most efficient designs. Almost anything except AUS-whatever would be better than 420. I love BG-42, but ATS-34, VG-10, D-2, A-2,even 1095 would do. If there are changes let me know, I'll take two. Thanks again for listening

To C.J. Buck- I received a 110 with nickle silver bolsters and a BG-42 blade annd green wood scales two days ago. I love the knife and found your dealer George Brantley an honorable and most honest gentleman. I have a small problem however, upon opening, the last 3/8" or so is extremely rough just before the lock engages. Also the lock feels like it has a 50# spring. Do you think some diamond grease would smooth out the lock without damage? It's brand new and I would hate to be without it. BTW the nickle silver bolsters are a big improvement over brass, well done!

To be honest I am not sure what "diamond grease" is. Is it a mild abrasive?

Also, does the rocker take much pressure to press down on its own or do you think the rocker is binding in the locking slot on the blade?

Hi! Diamond Grease is a grease with diamond dust mixed in. It's good as a smooting agent like rouge. The rocker is not binding, the rocker is very difficult to depress due to spring pressure.

Pardon the long lapse. I usually do not check messages over 5 days old and when I miss for a while threads disappear left unanswered.

Based on your description I could not tell if the blade and rocker were galling because of excess spring pressure. In that case it would seem that the diamond grease would help smooth the galling and then keeping the knive oiled would prevent future galling.

If the spring pressure is a negative for you you can send the knife in and we will fix it.

As to the nighthawk sheath question. It is on engineerings priority list. The nighthawk handle changes you suggested are not feasible per the cost of tooling. Blade steel changes are being considedered this year as special projects and exclusive opportunities for various dealers.

Joe or I will start a thread as those plans formalize.
