What would you or your family do if you had your "retreat" stocked
and all your family and friends were there you even have your garden
planted and all your animals penned up. When the local 2nd grade
teacher brings their family and students up the road looking for your
house because they heard from your children that you were "prepared".
They see your preperations and head right for your home because they
are starving and need something to eat. What would you do?
 
Yes they could, but look at the amount of food a 8yr old would consume,
and there would be what 40 of them. You had better have a prolific garden.
 
You got it the other way around! Think of how much nitrogen, calcium and iron a few of those kids would put into my garden! :D
 
First, ya never tell the kids that you have what you have. They are known for the loose lips syndrome and for the most part, young children probably wouldn't pay much attention to what's going on as far as how much food you bring in, etc. Keeping them in the dark as to provisions, weapons, water, etc., will help to alleviate the need to make a decision as to whether you ask them in or refuse to help.

Besides, if my kids are going on a field trip with their teacher to find food, as a responsible parent, I'd be along with them. As would many other parents who didn't have the foresight to stock up. That presents a problem, because hungry people go to extremes to get fed and many people wouldn't hesitate to steal or kill or both so their children can have a full belly and it's so unfair that you have so much and they have so little. It's dangerous to invite them in so they can gain access to everything and refusing them, especially with force, simply says you got what they want and they will be back.

Avoid the situation!
 
Simple really, let them SEE what they think is a good amount, they'll eat it, and you then convince your wife and kids to turn on the water works because there's no more food! We're gonna starve! Really put it on, they'll leave.
 
I think the initial assumption is incorrect. The Bus won't be full with a teacher, her family, and a bunch of school kids. It will have the teacher, her family, a bunch of kids and THEIR families.
1) As has been stated, don't make a big production of it to your kids. The risk of a secret being blown is proportional to the *square* of the number of people who know about it.
2) Put some effort into making your place hard to find, hard to see, and hard to access.
3) If people can contribute, pull their weight, and make a contribution, you consider cost vs. benefit in terms of who can stay and help out. Those that can't contribute leave - quickly - with whatever you can spare to help them on their way.
4) Those who can't or won't contribute, and won't leave (or who leave and come back)...... well, maybe you know someone with some pigs who'd like to barter for feed.

The problem with "eliminating" the problem is that when order is eventually
restored, the police will have some questions, some hard questions to
answer. Also, how can you do harm to a group of second graders?
Unless you have like a second home or cabin in a really rural setting
then at the very least the neighbors will come by to "chat". Also, on
a dark night your working lights will pull folks in like moths to a candle.
 
It can be a life boat, bomb shelter whatever...Limited resources who would make the tough decisions?

I'd send them all to fixer27's place. I've heard that he has more than enough for himself, his family, a busload of second graders, their parents, their teacher, and her family. ;)

Sure they can come over if they can make it through the minefield and
concertina wire, not to mention the punji sticks and crocadile infested
moat. :rolleyes:
 
well if something ever happened id be over in me and my fathers fallout hidden in the woods by our house. its an old sandstone quarry so nobody without experience in the woods can manage the terrain, and its so concealed we wouldnt have to worry about anyone caming for our supplies. but since the question involves that, i would pull out the 03' and toss them a copy of "edible plants and fungi"!
 
there are pepper spray grenades from www.shomertec.com that can be hooked up to a hose if you wanna spray it out the door or you can chuck it in front of them they'll get the hint and at worst catch a wiff of OC mix it with some cheap smoke grenades and most people wont stick around to ask questions. Make some non-lethal traps on the road like shotgun shell blanks hooked up to a trip wire. Make a big neon sign that says tresspassors will be shot TWICE. Make the road impassable by a metal pipe thats got sharp bolts threaded sticking thru holes and then run a chain down thru the pipes and wrap it around a tree and then lock it off, anybody running over that will have to walk up the road and into the traps. theres ALOT of ways to may people go away without making them dead.
