I just got one, and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting a more advanced "consumer level" camera. The low light sensitivity is really nice; much better than the D70s or the D40 that I've used before. There are plenty of reviews out there, so I won't bore everybody with the details, but I just thought I'd throw in my .02 on it.

The last photo my D40 will take for a while... :D

The D300's been getting rave reviews hasn't it?

I'm still happy with my D80 for the near future though. How does the weight difference feel? Is it noticeable?

Feathers and bricks... :D Not too much more than the D80 or the D70, but compared to the D40 it weighs a TON. Much bigger dimensionally, too. Wider thicker, taller, etc.

D40/D300 (forgive the craptacular pics, I ran out of decent cameras :D)

Yes, the D300 does seem to be enjoying some excellent reviews. As a D200 owner, I've been a bit ambivalent about immediately ponying up for a camera that represents Nikon's first foray into using what is actually a less expensive CMOS sensor technology. At this point though, it looks like my fears may have been unwarranted.

FWIW, I ran into a D200 owner who was complaining about the sharpness on his camera. He took a few shots with the 300 and immediately went down and traded his 200 in. :D

I don't think the 200 could be that bad, but that guy seemed to think so...

I think these new cameras are like cars... "Ford is better! No, Chevy is better!" They're all pretty dang decent and it's hard to just get completely screwed. There are improvements in the newer models, but unless you're a professional looking for a racecar, you kinda can't go wrong with anything out there. I know my big things were specifically that I already own Nikon glass, I want remote flash control, and better low light performance than the D40/80 can offer. The high-ISO performance on the 300 is saving me literally thousands of dollars in lenses.

Yeah I reckon even the cheapest camera has a sweetspot - a limited range of parameters that it can take amazing photos in. The best SLR's just have a bigger sweet spot that's all.

To be totall blunt with the tennis analogy....

Cheap P&S - 50's era wooden racquet.

Latest SLR - Carbon fibre, oversized, super light racquet
