Greetings all, I may have a chance to obtain a Nikon COOLPIX 775 digital camera. Features include: 2.14 megapixel CCD, 3X optical zoom Nikkor lens, 2.5X digital zoom, built-in flash, 1.5" LCD monitor, and 7 selectable autofocus scene modes. Includes 8MB flash card, videocable, USB cable, and battery with battery charger.
I do not know what a vast majority of what I just typed is! I do know that Nikon is a very good quality camera. Beyond that, the rest of it is Greek to me.
So, in the interest of me being able to post some pics of my new babies, (knives, that is...) Can someone please enlighten me as to what all this stuff means, and should I go ahead and get this doohicky? BTW, if I do get this, I will need some serious advice on how to post pics!:D
Thanks in advance for all your replies, Mongo

A friend of mine has one. Very good camera. The 8Mb memory stick will not be enough if you plan to make lots of pics. Later you should get a 96Mb extra one.
Here in France you can find this camera at about $350 (with the standart 8Mb memory card).

Mongo,
That camera should do just fine for taking pictures of your favorite knives and posting them here for all of us to see. :) The resolution of 2.14 megapixels is a bit on the low side by today's (rapidly evolving) standards, but it's more than sufficient for most on-line applications. About the only time you might find yourself wanting a higher resolution is if you start printing out enlargements of your digital pictures.

If possible, check to see if the camera has a macro mode. This will make taking closeup pictures of your knives much easier. Sometimes the feature is built right into the camera, and other times a separate lens attachment is required.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 880, which is a 3.34 megapixel model. I have only praise for the quality and Nikon's cameras. At 2048x1536, the photos I've taken have shown incredible (sometimes ridiculous) detail. I'll take a portrait of someone, and the digital result sometimes seems to be a detailed study of their facial features, pore by pore. LOL.

Although the 775 is a 2.14 megapixel camera, I do believe that it'll be more than sufficient for your needs.

I second the recommendation to peruse the www.dpreview.com site. That's where I learned about digital cameras and decided on my Nikon. Also, if you have an opportunity to "try before you buy", I'd definitely do that before making a decision.

Good luck!

looks good to me, i have a coolpix 800 that i'm pretty happy with. However, i'm currently looking for something smaller. If you're going to be using it mainly in your house it shouldn't be a problem but if you are planning on carrying it around with you you might want to think about something like the canon digital elph series. I'm planning on buying their s200 models, similar features to the one you're looking at but much smaller. Of course it's not nikon either :D One thing i would say is check out bizrate.com and search for nikon 775 and then sort the results by price. this allows you to find the cheapest dealer on the web. Nikon is nice, but there are a lot of cameras out there with similar features; I'd advise you to try some out first hand before making a decision. Hope this helps.
