Nimravi - which one to buy?

At this point, I am considering all four plainedge options - the cub, the regular, the M2 version and the tanto version.

I want to carry it inverted on my hip, concealed under a BDU blouse. I am 5'9'' so the cub might be more carryable than the regular size one. On the other hand, 4.5 in is just right in terms of blade length for me. I think the M2 steel might be a disadvantage - I really don't want the hassle of wiping the blade down in the field. How useful is the tanto version? How pointy is the tip on the regular version? Is the tip of the regular version comparable to the sheepsfoot bladed grippy?

i have the regular in M2. Steel-wise, u don't really have to worry about the rust factor too much cuz it's really won't get rusted that easily. So I would say for the steel it is worthy t go for the M2.

Now for the size, I was actually in your shoes on deciding whether to get the Nim or the cub a while back too. I've got the Nim finally and my rationale is that even though it is true that the cub is much more comfy to carry EDC, but it's blade length is too short to be useful for a fixed blade to me. And I simply don't like the idea of getting both the large and the small cuz it is, to me just too much to have the same blade in two different sizes. So I resolved that I would get the regular one cuz it will always do what the cub can do, where it will also do what the cub can't because of its size. My 2 cents.

I also have the full size standard Nim. in M2. I have had it for a little over 3 years now. I have been very happy with it and its performance. I don't have a need to carry a blade with cammy fatigues any more. When I did (2nd RANGER Battalion) I carried a Morseth Pilots knife, about the same size, and it was uncoated so even more chance for rust. It all comes down to the fact that you have to take care of your gear. I have had and do have many knives in stainless and carbon and will take a high grade carbon, thank you, for field use short of steady salt water exposure. What I did do with my Nim. was to take the stair step tape, the stuff with sand in it, and trace the handle then trim it and stick it on each handle. Made a world of difference and has worked well for nearly three years.
As far as carrying something under your BDUs, remember the definition of BDU "Bag, Duffle-Uniform" Try the knife in an inverted and right side up carry. Yea, its cool to carry inverted, but its also cool for a dealer to sell someone another knife. I know of one troop that dropped a Gerber on the floor of the CO's office when he got up from the chair and another that lost his Buck 110 in a desert, both were inverted carry.

i have the Nimravus 140 (CE) in 154CM. it's really tough. and if you could see it in you to maintain the M2 blade, i'd say it'd definitely be worth it to get the upgraded steel. but there have been a couple accounts of the M2 Nimravus blade rusting here in General Discussion, very recently in fact.

i wouldn't bother with the tanto version tho, it'd take away alot of it's daily usefulness, in my opinion. and the point is very pointy, ha.

I have the 140 in M2. No rust problems. I can get it really, really, sharp. The cub isn't too short in the blade. It's too short in the handle.

Well I have 2 Nims.
ATS-34 and 154cm (don't ask why).
Love them, cannot say enough about this knife.
I have very expesive knives, and the Nim is one of my alltime favs.

My 154cm has been through total hell!
I mean things a knife should not go through.
It is very easy to sharpen, and is still one of the sharpest knives I have ever seen.

I am the biggest D2 fan around, with Dozier as my reference.
I have read many articles that say M2 will hold an edge better than D2!
That says alot.

Since you will be fondling the knife when not in the field, it would be a perfect opportunity to clean it.

Bottom Line:
Don't worry about it rusting.
The knife has the highest recommendations from most people that have put it through its paces.
I can't think of a better knife for the money.

I've got the cub(440C) and find it's handle a bit small for my taste, and I have small hands. Wouldn't want to do a lot of hard cutting with it. Works fine for light duty stuff, it lives in my cook kit. Haven't handled a full size Nim.

Good luck, Gordon

That's one nice blade. Too bad BM is not selling them anymore. :( But I will be equally happy if I see BM has a silver/satin version of the current 154CM Cub, though.
