Hi everyone. You have a pretty neat forum here. This is my first post.

I am looking at the Benchmade Nimravus and the Swamp Rat Howling Rat. I want the knife for hunting (field dress deer and small game) and as a general purpose camping and hiking knife. For camping I plan on taking a hatchet for cutting fire wood so the knife would not be used for anything heavy like that.

I don't plan on using it as an EDC knife but I would want it to be useable for self defense for the times I am carrying it. It looks like the Nimravus would be better for thrusting and stabbing type due to its being more pointy. Is that true or is the Rat just as good?

I like the sheath on the Nimravus and would probably buy a custom sheath for the Rat later on.

Any suggestions or experience you can share on these knives is appreciated.

Thanks!!

While the Howling Rat cuts well, unless you want a very stout knife for heavy utility, I would go for thinner stock for more cutting efficiency as well as lighter weight, something like the Deerhunter. There have been several reviews of the Nimravus on Knifeforums in the Outdoor forum so you might want to have a look there, and there has been discussion of both knives in the review forum here.
